Today, we\u2019re watching a video essay about why the darkness of Paul Schrader\u2019s First Reformed defined the 2010s.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\" id=\"block-9dd37ce8-fe90-4a64-b5c6-d5489b56104b\"\/>Everyone\u2019s idea of a comfort food movie is different. For some folks, there\u2019s nothing more soothing than a low-stakes romantic comedy. For others, h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>iness is a gory slasher. In the end, genre doesn\u2019t define a comfort food movie, <em>comfort <\/em>does. That warm, curative feeling that everything\u2019s going to be alright, if only for ninety minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Asking what an <em>anti<\/em>-comfort food film looks like feels like a cruel thing to do after a decidedly cruel year like 2020. But curiosity compels me. A significant ingredient of comfort food <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> is that they feel <em>familiar<\/em>. So it stands to reason that anti-comfort food films would <em>challenge<\/em> us. That they would offer a crisis rather than a back rub.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paul Schrader<\/strong>\u2018s <em><strong>First Reformed<\/strong> <\/em>is a film about \u2014 and which inspires \u2014 crisis. It tells of a lonely minister (<strong>Ethan Hawke<\/strong>) who descends into despair after confronting the seemingly inevitable reality that humans have doomed the planet to environmental catastrophe. His obsession with the destruction of the world steadily snowballs into an obsession with destruction itself. And soon the priest finds himself consumed by an arrogant and ultimately suffocating lack of hope.<\/p>\n<p>Much like the author of the video essay below, <em>First Reformed<\/em> hit me like a ton of bricks. Its paranoia, panic, and furious vision of despondency did not leave me for a long time. I cannot think of a film that more pointedly articulates the painful shift of the Information Age. We have (often terrifying) knowledge at our fingertips.
