\n The occupation of City Hall Park by activists has been growing \u2014 as 400 demonstrators slept there overnight Wednesday into Thursday, organizers said.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s roughly four times the number of people there on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

Many go home after the \u201csleepover,\u201d but on Thursday afternoon, there were still about 250 \u201cOccupy City Hall\u201d protesters \u2014 some in lawn chairs and sleeping bags, surrounded by a myriad of cardboard signs reading \u201cDefund Police,\u201d \u201cBlack Lives Matter\u201d and \u201cI Can\u2019t Breathe\u201d \u2014 at City Hall Park and on the adjacent sidewalks throughout the day.<\/p>\n

The activists have vowed to camp out through June 30, the day before the City Council\u2019s deadline to app<\/a>rove the 2021 fiscal-year budget.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re determined to fight and not to give up,\u201d said one demonstrator, Winsome Pendergrass, 62, of Brownsville, Brooklyn, explaining that she\u2019s \u201chere for the long haul until we get what we\u2019re demanding.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe billion dollars we are calling for, it can be shared equally between housing and education and health care \u2014 and for the people in the gay community who are being marginalized and used and discarded by society,\u201d Pendergrass said.<\/p>\n

Brooklyn resident Megan Candolfi, 28, added, \u201cEveryone is here to make sure that the momentum keeps going. The goal in the end is complete abolition of the Police Department in general<\/a>. Everyone wants to invest in community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaker Corey Johnson and other City Council leaders embraced the \u201cDefund Police\u201d movement this month, calling for $1 billion in cuts.<\/p>\n

Mayor de Blasio has said that an unspecified amount of funding would be shifted from the NYPD to various youth groups and social<\/a> services.<\/p>\n

Hizzoner said the protestors are welcome to stay in the park as long as they don\u2019t erect permanent structures.<\/p>\n
