HBO Max\u2019s upcoming\u00a0Peacemaker<\/em><\/strong> series seemed to come out of nowhere \u2014 all of a sudden, John Cena<\/strong>\u00a0was going to star in a limited series spin-off of James Gunn<\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0The Suicide Squad<\/em>, reprising his character in a movie that hadn\u2019t even come out yet. And in a sense, the whole thing \u2014 which was announced and put in development in the span of weeks \u2014 was all unplanned, according to Gunn.<\/p>\n

In an Instagram post<\/a> marking the beginning of production for\u00a0Peacemaker<\/em>, Gunn revealed that he conceived of and wrote the whole series while stuck in quarantine. It happ<\/a>ened because he had just wrapped on Warner Bros.\u2019\u00a0The Suicide Squad<\/em> and had turned in a draft for Marvel\u2019s highly anticipated sequel\u00a0Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3<\/em>. And rather than twiddling his thumbs, Gunn started to write a\u00a0Peacemaker<\/em> series for fun\u2026and wrote the entire first season in two months.
\n\u201c5 months ago, while quarantining, I was almost done editing\u00a0The Suicide Squad<\/em>\u00a0& had just turned in a draft of\u00a0Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3<\/em>\u00a0& was awaiting notes,\u201d Gunn wrote. \u201cNormally I would try & take a break during this time & go on vacation. But with Covid that wasn\u2019t happening. So, having nothing else to do, I started writing a TV series,\u00a0Peacemaker<\/em>, mostly for fun, as I didn\u2019t believe it was ever going to happen. I wrote a whole first season in 8 weeks. And now, here I am in my trailer, on the first day of shooting. Life is surreal. Let\u2019s go (& go safely!)\u201d<\/p>\n

HBO Max first announced the\u00a0Peacemaker<\/em> series in September, as part of the WarnerMedia<\/a> streaming platform\u2019s strategy to spin off its DC properties into TV shows that will bring more eyes, and more subscribers, to its service. But it seems Gunn was already rarin\u2019 to go, corporate strategy or not, as was Cena, who was signed on from the start. Since then, the series has been steadily accumulating cast members, including\u00a0Danielle Brooks<\/strong>\u00a0(Orange is the New Black<\/em>),\u00a0Robert Patrick<\/strong>\u00a0(Terminator 2: Judgment Day<\/em>),\u00a0Jennifer Holland<\/strong>\u00a0(Brightburn<\/em>), and\u00a0Chris Conrad<\/strong>\u00a0(Patriot<\/em>), and more.
\nGunn\u2019s series will show how Peacemaker became \u201ca man who believes in peace at any cost \u2014 no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.\u201d\u00a0Gunn and\u00a0The Suicide Squad<\/em>\u00a0producer\u00a0Peter Safran<\/strong>\u00a0will serve as executive producers of the series, with Cena as co-executive producer.<\/p>\n
