A 24-year-old Colorado man with ties to \u201ca radical militia group\u201d faces federal charges for allegedly assaulting police officers during the US Capitol riot, court papers state.<\/p>\n

Robert Gieswein allegedly sprayed an unknown substance at Capitol cops trying to hold back the mob that broke into the seat of American democracy on Jan. 6, according to a warrant for his arrest filed Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cGieswein assaulted federal officers outside the Capitol; observed and encouraged rioters as they broke a window of the Capitol building; entered the building through that broken window; and then charged through the Capitol building,\u201d an FBI agent wrote in the affidavit.<\/p>\n

Feds say Gieswein, of Woodland Park, app<\/a>ears to be affiliated with the anti-government militia movement the Three Percenter and runs a private paramilitary training group called the Woodland Wild Dogs.<\/p>\n

During the riot, Gieswein wore \u201cdistinctive paramilitary gear,\u201d including a camouflage shirt, an Army-style helmet and goggles \u2014 as well as a vest with \u201cWoodland Wild Dog\u201d patches on it, the court document states. <\/p>\n

Videos and photos reviewed by the FBI allegedly showed Gieswein brandishing a baseball bat and encouraging fellow rioters as they shattered a Capitol window with a piece of wood and a stolen law enforcement shield.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe rioters, including Gieswein, then climb through the window in the Capitol,\u201d the affidavit states. <\/p>\n

\u201cAs Gieswein scrambles up into the building, the baseball bat is visible in his hand.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview with a journalist the day before the riot, Gieswein had said that \u201ccorrupt politicians\u201d needed to be jailed, naming several prominent Democrats and alluding to an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory.<\/p>\n

He faces charges of assault on a federal officer, destruction of government property, obstruction of an official proceeding, entering a restricted building, disorderly conduct and aiding and abetting.<\/p>\n

It was unclear whether Gieswein had been arrested in connection with the charges or whether he had an attorney.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
