A physicist has weighed in on the mystery surrounding the\u00a0interstellar object<\/a>\u00a0\u2018Oumuamua,\u2019\u00a0which flew past Earth back in 2017 at an unusually high speed.<\/p>\n

Harvard professor Avi Loeb remarked during an interview with Salon that it\u2019s possible the fast, cigar-shaped object was an interstellar spacecraft.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAt first, astronomers assumed it must be a comet, because these are the objects that are most loosely bound to stars,\u201d Loeb said. \u201cThe problem with that was there was no cometary tail.\u201d<\/p>\n

Loeb wrote a book on the topic, titled: \u201cExtraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth<\/a>.\u201d The book is set to be released next week.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people say, \u2018OK\u00a0it\u2019s not a comet, maybe it\u2019s just a rock.\u2019\u00a0But the problem is, about half a year later, it was reported that there was an excess push in addition to the force of gravity acting on it by the sun,\u201d he continued.\u00a0\u201cIt exhibited some additional force. Usually that force comes from the rocket effect of the cometary tail, but there was no cometary tail. So the question was, what produces this excess push?\u201d<\/p>\n

Loeb told the website there was another object discovered that exhibited an excess push called\u00a02020-SO, which he said ended up being a rocket booster from a failed mission of lunar lander,\u00a0Surveyor II\u00a0that was launched in 1966.\u00a0He said because that object was artificially made and had no cometary trail,\u00a0it \u201cprovides evidence\u201d that we can tell the difference between a rock and an object \u2014 like the rocket booster \u2014\u00a0that is pushed by sunlight.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo me, it demonstrated the case that perhaps \u2018Oumuamua was artificial, definitely not made by us because it\u2019s been only a few months close to us. We couldn\u2019t even chase it with our best rockets,\u201d he told\u00a0Salon.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Loeb added that it was\u00a0on the \u201cshinier\u00a0end of all the objects we have seen from the solar system.\u201d<\/p>\n

In November 2018, a\u00a0study\u00a0published<\/a> by Loeb and others at the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics suggested \u2018Oumuamua could be \u201ca lightsail of artificial origin\u201d sent from another civilization.\u00a0However, the researcher who discovered \u2018Oumuamua,\u00a0Canadian physicist and astronomer Robert Weryk, said the\u00a0idea\u00a0it was from another civilization was\u00a0just \u201cwild speculation.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u2018Oumuamua, which means \u201cpathfinder\u201d or \u201cscout\u201d in Hawaiian, was first classified as an asteroid when it was spotted in 2017\u00a0travel<\/a>ing at 196,000 mph. However,\u00a0it had recently been found more akin to a comet.<\/p>\n

NASA\u00a0confirmed<\/a>\u00a0that it is the \u201cfirst object ever seen in our solar system that is known to have originated elsewhere.\u201d\u00a0\n <\/div>\n
