“#COVID-19 data analyst Rebekah Jones arrested, tests positive<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Former Florida data scientist Rebekah Jones was arrested on a charge that she hacked into the state\u2019s emergency response system \u2014 and later learned she tested positive for COVID-19.<\/p>\n

Jones \u2014 who said she was fired from the state\u2019s Department of Health in May for refusing to alter coronavirus data \u2014 turned herself in late Sunday, the Tampa Bay Times reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Her attorney, Steve Dobson, said Jones, 31, was tested for COVID-19 after being booked into the Leon County Detention Facility, and learned she was positive on Monday.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s accused of illegally accessing Florida\u2019s emergency alert heal<\/a>t<\/a>h system<\/a>, including to send a Nov. 10 message to state staffers dealing with the pandemic, urging them to \u201cspeak up before another 17,000 people are dead.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know this is wrong. You don\u2019t have to be a part of this. Be a hero. Speak out before it\u2019s too late,\u201d the message read.<\/p>\n

Authorities raided Jones\u2019 home in December, seizing her computers and other data equipment.<\/p>\n

Jones \u2014 who has been a vocal critic of Gov. Ron DeSantis\u2019\u00a0handling of the pandemic\u00a0 and questioned the validity of the state\u2019s COVID data \u2014 maintained her innocence.<\/p>\n

In a statement on Twitter Saturday, she said there was a warrant for her arrest and that she would be surrendering \u201cto protect my family from continued police violence, and to show that I\u2019m ready to fight whatever they throw at me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Governor will not win his war on science<\/a> and free speech. He will not silence those who speak out,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

Jones was charged with unauthorized access of a computer system, which carries a sentence of up to five years in prison.<\/p>\n

She was freed Monday on $2,500 bond following a court app<\/a>earance.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are going to defend this case vigorously,\u2019\u2019\u00a0her lawyer said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
