Experts have discovered an\u00a0\u201calmost-complete\u201d fossil of\u00a0a 150-million-year-old\u00a0shark\u00a0in Germany, giving them a nearly unprecedented look into Earth\u2019s distant past.<\/p>\n

The study, published in the scientific journal\u00a0Papers in Palaeontology<\/a>, describes a fossilized\u00a0Asteracanthus<\/em>, which lived between 361 million years and 66 million years ago. The fossil was discovered in the Solnhofen limestones in Bavaria, Germany, famous for the discovery of the first\u00a0archaeopteryx<\/a>\u00a0and other shark and ray skeletons.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe specimen is represented by an almost completely preserved skeleton of the extinct hybodontiform shark Asteracanthus, the total length of which was two-and-a-half meters in life, which made it a giant among Jurassic sharks,\u201d a\u00a0statement\u00a0from the University of Vienna reads.<\/a><\/p>\n

Asteracanthus<\/em>\u00a0was a type of Hybodontiformes, a close relative of modern sharks and rays. Hybodontiformes had two dorsal fins and ranged in size, with some as small as a few centimeters, all the way to nearly 10 feet in length.<\/p>\n

While ancient shark teeth have been found all over the world, because they are made of cartilage, fossilized shark skeletons are rare.<\/p>\n

The fossil of Asteracanthus contained more than 150 teeth, which all had \u201ca well-developed central cusp that is accompanied on both sides by several smaller cusplets,\u201d the university added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis specialized type of dentition suggests that Asteracanthus was an active predator feeding on a wide range of prey animals,\u201d study co-author Sebastian Stumpf explained. \u201cAsteracanthus was certainly not only one of the largest cartilaginous fishes of its time, but also one of the most impressive.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Asteracanthus was first discovered by Swiss-American naturalist Louis Agassiz nearly 180 years ago after looking at \u201cisolated fossil dorsal fin spines,\u201d the university added.<\/p>\n

In November, researchers\u00a0discovered<\/a>\u00a0a 370-million-year old shark with bizarre teeth.\n <\/div>\n
