Hollywood\u00a0loves<\/em> brand awareness. They love it more than life itself. A studio is far more likely to give a green light to an established property than to something fresh and original, because that\u2019s just how it goes. It\u2019s nothing new \u2013 Tinseltown has been doing this for decades. But that doesn\u2019t make it any less draining. The latest example:\u00a0Wonka<\/em><\/strong>, a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory<\/em><\/strong> prequel movie that explores the origins of chocolatier and child murderer Willy Wonka. It sounds unnecessary, but there\u2019s one silver lining: Paul King<\/strong>, the filmmaker behind the wonderful\u00a0Paddington<\/em> films, is at the helm.<\/p>\n

If that news<\/a> sounds familiar, that\u2019s because this movie has been in the works for some time now. But now it has a release date.<\/p>\n

Warner Bros. is moving ahead with\u00a0Wonka<\/em>, a prequel that will focus on Willy Wonka\u2019s early days. The project has been kicking around for a while, and back in 2018, it was reported that\u00a0Paddington<\/em> director Paul King would helm a script<\/a> from Simon Rich<\/strong> (An American Pickle<\/em>). There\u2019s been little movement on the film since then, but today it\u2019s being reported that WB is plowing ahead with King and Rich\u2019s version, locking down a\u00a0March 17, 2023<\/strong> theatrical release date in the process.<\/p>\n

Paddington<\/em> and\u00a0Harry Potter<\/em> producer\u00a0David Heyman is producing the flick, and in 2016, Heyman told \/Film:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a remake. They\u2019ve done two films, quite different. But it\u2019s possibly an origin story. We\u2019re just in the early stages of it, working with a writer called\u00a0Simon Rich, which is wonderful\u2026I think there\u2019s a lot in his character that suggests who he is and also where he might come from or what his childhood or his middle age might have been like. So we\u2019re exploring that. We\u2019re discussing it. We\u2019re in the very early stages and very excited about what lies ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Roald Dahl\u2019s\u00a0Charlie and the Chocolate Factory<\/em> was published in 1964 and adapted into the 1971 movie\u00a0Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory<\/em>, with\u00a0Gene Wilder delivering a memorable performance as Wonka. The story was adapted yet again with Tim Burton\u2019s 2005 movie\u00a0Charlie and the Chocolate Factory<\/em>, which featured Johnny Depp as Wonka. Burton\u2019s film actually introduced a new backstory for the character, showing him as the child of a chocolate-hating dentist. But that storyline is unlikely to show up in this new prequel.<\/p>\n

I love Paul King\u2019s\u00a0Paddington<\/em> movies<\/a>, but I\u2019m having a hard time drumming up much enthusiasm for a Willy Wonka prequel. What else is there to say about the character, really? Part of the magic of the character is that he\u2019s so mysterious. If you fill in his backstory that mystery goes away. But hey, what the hell do I know, right? Can\u2019t wait to see what hot young actor they cast as hot young Wonka! According to Collider<\/a>,\u00a0Tom Holland<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>are both being sought after for the role, because of course they are.
