I\u2019m very excited to see\u00a0Last Night in Soho<\/em><\/strong>, Edgar Wright<\/strong>\u2018s first straight-up horror movie (as opposed to the horror-comedies he\u2019s made before). The movie was due out in 2020, but of course, the coronavirus got in the way. Now, Wright\u2019s\u00a0Soho<\/em> is set to arrive in 2021, and there\u2019s a new image from the film to drum up hype. The pic features\u00a0Thomasin McKenzie<\/strong> looking app<\/a>ropriately freaked the eff out.\u00a0McKenzie plays a modern-day woman who makes \u201ca mysterious connection\u201d with an actress from the 1960s, played by\u00a0Anya Taylor-Joy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nThe image above comes from Empire<\/a>, showcasing star\u00a0Thomasin McKenzie as \u201cburgeoning fashionista Eloise.\u201d As you can see from the image, things aren\u2019t going so well for Eloise. Plot details about\u00a0Last Night in Soho<\/em> remain intentionally vague, but we do know that the story involves the modern-day Eloise having some sort of connection with a woman from the 1960s. That woman is Sandy, played by\u00a0Anya Taylor-Joy. The official synopsis states: \u201cA young girl, who is passionate about fashion design, mysteriously enters the 1960s, where she encounters her idol, a dazzling wannabe singer. But 1960s London is not what it seems, and time seems to fall apart with shady consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking with Empire, director Edgar Wright revealed he almost cast Taylor-Joy in the Eloise role. \u201cI saw Split<\/em>, and Anya plays an innocent girl who gets thrown into a situation,\u201d Wright said. \u201cI thought, \u2018Maybe she\u2019s played Eloise. Maybe she should be Sandy.’\u201d Of McKenzie, Wright added: \u201cShe\u2019s so young and fragile that the film is going to be twice as scary.\u201d<\/p>\n

When the project was first announced it was billed as \u201ca straight-up psychological horror-thriller,\u201d with Wright citing films like\u00a0Don\u2019t Look Now<\/em>\u00a0and Roman Polanski\u2019s\u00a0Repulsion<\/em>\u00a0as inspiration. Wright said at the time: \u201cI realized I had never made a film about central London \u2013 specifically Soho, somewhere I\u2019ve spent a huge amount of time in the last 25 years. With\u00a0Hot Fuzz<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Shaun Of The Dead<\/em>\u00a0you make movies<\/a> about places you\u2019ve lived in. This movie is about the London I\u2019ve existed in.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019m a big fan of Wright\u2019s work and I\u2019m very interested in seeing him do a straight-up horror film rather than a horror-comedy. He clearly understands the genre and I have no doubt he\u2019ll deliver something memorable.\u00a0Last Night in Soho<\/em>, which also stars\u00a0Matt Smith<\/strong>, will open on April 23<\/strong>, 2021<\/strong> \u2013 unless it gets moved again, which is always possible these days.<\/p>\n
