Chinese billionaire Jack Ma appeared on video publicly Wednesday for the first time in months, and is reportedly laying low after the lengthy disappearance. <\/p>\n

Ma\u2019s appearance came at a virtual social<\/a> welfare event called the \u201cJack Ma Rural Teachers Awards,\u201d according to the Chinese state-affiliated newspaper Global Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Duncan Clark, an investor and adviser on China\u2019s tech sector, recently told NPR<\/a> he believes the once-talkative Alibaba founder is living under the radar after facing backlash for a speech in which he attacked China\u2019s financial regulatory system in October. <\/p>\n

After the speech, Chinese regulators suspended Alibaba\u2019s financial affiliate, Ant Group\u2019s $37 billion IPO, and also launched a probe into Ma\u2019s company. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think underlying this pushing back on Jack Ma is also a reassertion of the role of the state in the economy, which is very much part of President Xi Jinping\u2019s agenda,\u201d Duncan told NPR. <\/p>\n

Ma, a former English teacher turned entrepreneur, hasn\u2019t been seen in public in over two months. He even failed to appear on his own reality show, according to reports. <\/p>\n

\u201cMy understanding is that he\u2019s been told to lay low,\u201d Duncan told the outlet. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think they just basically they want him back in his box,\u201d he continued. \u201cOne wonders if there\u2019s some degree of jealousy or irritation for President Xi or the government in general<\/a>, that this, you know, rather uncontrollable figure is popping up in different places around the world.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
