\n Mayor Bill de Blasio blamed the president for creating a \u201cpolitical controversy\u201d over his decision to paint a Black Lives Matter mural in front of Trump Tower \u2014 while begging the federal government to rescue the city from its coronavirus-induced budget crisis.<\/p>\n

\u201cI made a decision to honor the black people of this city and all of America \u2014 African Americans who built this city \u2014 by simply saying, \u201cBlack Lives Matter,\u201d and putting it someplace where it would get the attention it deserves. That is not anything but respect, a show of respect for people who deserve that respect,\u201d de Blasio said on CNN Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe president decided to turn it into a political controversy for his own ends,\u201d the mayor said.<\/p>\n

President Trump ripped de Blasio on Twitter<\/a> Thursday after The Post reported that Hizzoner plans to paint \u201cBlack Lives Matter\u201d on the street in front of the Trump Tower.<\/p>\n

\u201cTold that @NYCMayor Bill de Blasio wants to paint the fabled & beautiful Fifth Avenue, right in front of Trump Tower\/Tiffany, with a big yellow Black Lives Matter sign. \u2018Pigs in a Blanket, Fry \u2018Em Like Bacon\u2019, referring to killing Police, is their chant. NYC Police are furious!,\u201d the president tweeted.<\/p>\n

CNN host Alisyn Camerota asked de Blasio if the \u201cpublic spat\u201d with Trump was going to help his quest for a federal bailout to save the jobs of thousands of municipal workers the mayor has threatened to lay off without a stimulus.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the president wants America to restart and recover he has to help New York City,\u201d de Blasio said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we don\u2019t get a federal stimulus by October 1 we have to lay off 22,000 teachers, educators, firefighters, EMTs, health care workers, people who are the heroes in the fight against the coronavirus,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of them now won\u2019t have a job because there\u2019s just no money. There\u2019s no revenue,\u201d de Blasio added.<\/p>\n

But City Council Speaker Corey Johnson said Thursday there were other ways to slash spending than giving pink slips to 22,000 public employees.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
