“De Blasio says \u2018enough is enough\u2019 for protesters breaking curfew<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Thursday that \u201cenough is enough\u201d when it comes to protesters demonstrating against police brutality past the citywide 8 p.m. curfew.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the context of crisis, in the context of curfew, there comes a point where enough is enough,\u201d de Blasio said during his daily City Hall press briefing.<\/p>\n

For the past week, masses have flooded Big App<\/a>le streets in protest over the Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd \u2014 and over several recent nights, violent clashes with police ensued as looters struck parts of the city.<\/p>\n

The chaos forced a besieged de Blasio \u2014 already battered by mounting criticism over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic \u2014 to order the Big Apple\u2019s first citywide curfew since World War II.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am the duly elected leader of this city, I have put in a curfew,\u201d de Blasio said. \u201cIf officers say now it\u2019s the time to go home, it\u2019s time to go home.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew remains in effect through Sunday.<\/p>\n

The mayor added, \u201cI want to be clear, when people are instructed by the NYPD, especially after curfew, they must follow those instructions. The NYPD has actually taken \u2026 a very open approach, respecting protest, flexible as always.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the press briefing, de Blasio said the NYPD has shown restraint amid the protests and danced around reporters\u2019 questions about whether police should be allowed to arrest and use force against peaceful demonstrators out after curfew.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of complexity here,\u201d the mayor said, adding, \u201cBut the fact is, look, in many places in this world and \u2014 especially, I can say this \u2014 many places in the good ol\u2019 USA, a curfew at 8 p.m., that would be the end of discussion right there.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio continued, \u201cIt is the nature of New York City and the restraint shown by the NYPD that we\u2019re trying to give people extra space, if they do it the right way \u2014 if they respect the instructions of the NYPD and do no violence, no harm \u2013 don\u2019t commit any violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hizzoner explained that the recent demonstrations are \u201cnot the protests we have known for decades.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is an additional element trying to create violence and intermixing with the peaceful protesters and\u2026trying to get people set against each other,\u201d de Blasio said of the anarchist-minded agitators.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s insidious,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

When asked by a reporter about online videos showing cops using batons and force against protesters at Brooklyn\u2019s Cadman Plaza Wednesday night, de Blasio admitted he has not seen the clips, but said if there are any incidents that need to be investigated, \u201cIt will be.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I know about last night is that the curfew was honored overwhelmingly by New Yorkers, again, almost no vandalism or looting last night,\u201d said de Blasio. \u201cThere was some peaceful protest, overwhelmingly peaceful, certainly throughout the day and into the night. A lot of restraint from the NYPD overall.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
