If Barbie\u2019s mission is to inspire, her maker couldn\u2019t have chosen a better model than Maya Angelou.<\/p>\n

Last week, Mattel announced that the cherished poet and civil rights activist had been added to Barbie\u2019s \u201cInspiring Women\u201d series<\/a>, which includes re-creations of Rosa Parks, Ella Fitzgerald and Susan B. Anthony.<\/p>\n

However, the dolls are already sold out online, prompting pleas from fans to release more of the coveted collectible.<\/p>\n

The new doll wears a printed fabric inspired by the traditional Ghanaian textiles Angelou wore, in the forms of a dress and the writer\u2019s signature headwrap. The doll also has a \u201ccurvy,\u201d more realistic physique \u2014 as is common with Mattel\u2019s tribute Barbies. The toymaker wrote that Angelou is a \u201cfitting addition\u201d to the collection, calling her 1969 memoir, \u201cI Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,\u201d \u201ca gripping account of overcoming adversity in her early life.\u201d <\/p>\n

While Barbie\u2019s new Maya Angelou doll is \u201cbeautiful,\u201d according to fans, they\u2019re complaining that she\u2019s too hard to find.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy 6 yr old daughter (whom I named Maya) was beyond flattered that the doll named after the great Maya Angelou was sold out in less than two days from its app<\/a>arent release,\u201d wrote @mo980298<\/a> on Twitter<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m sad I can\u2019t get one but happy that so many folks are scooping them up!\u201d<\/p>\n

Walmart.com<\/a> no longer lists Barbie\u2019s Maya Angelou doll, though other \u201cInspiring Women\u201d are available. Meanwhile, the $29.99 doll is unavailable for online purchase on Target\u2019s site, which advises shoppers to check shelf stock locally.<\/p>\n

\u201cDisappointing that this first round has so few made and now are up on reseller sites at quadruple the price,\u201d added @cwilliamsnyperry_LA<\/a>. The coveted doll is currently being hustled for as much as $500 on eBay<\/a>, well beyond the original price tag. \u201cI hope that you will make more and sell at this original price. Also if you make more dolls in this line increase the number to accommodate purchases for personal use,\u201d the fan said.<\/p>\n

On Jan. 19, the @AskTarget Twitter account replied to the original thread, bringing some clarity to the issue. \u201cThis doll was just added to the collection a few days ago and has not been released to our shelves yet,\u201d they wrote, directing followers to Target.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Users can sign up to be notified<\/a> if and when the Angelou doll returns to Mattel\u2019s online shop.<\/p>\n

According to Guy Johnson, Angelou\u2019s son, it\u2019s no wonder why a doll honoring his mom is resonating with so many. <\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother, Dr. Maya Angelou, was a pioneer and an activist with an invincible spirit for justice,\u201d his Jan. 14 statement reads<\/a>. \u201cThrough her words and actions, she developed a unique ability to create deep connections with people around the world. She used to say, \u2018I write from the Black perspective, but I aim for the human heart.\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/p>\n

The toymaker also points out that Angelou became the first African American and woman poet to speak at a presidential inauguration, for President Bill Clinton\u2019s 1993 swearing-in.<\/p>\n
