If you\u2019ve already set up Money in Excel but haven\u2019t spent much time with it yet, here\u2019s how you can make the most of it.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sign_in_and_Update_Money_in_Excel\"><\/span>Sign in and Update Money in Excel<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-365\/blog\/2020\/06\/15\/introducing-money-excel-easier-manage-finances\/\">Money in Excel<\/a> consists of a template with an add-in. It doesn\u2019t offer a direct internet connection that runs in the background. So although you connect your accounts and save the file, you must sign in each time you open it. In addition, you\u2019ll need to manually update it to receive your latest transactions and balances.<\/p>\n<p>So, open your Money in Excel file and click \u201cGet Started\u201d in the pane on the right. You can see exactly how your money is spent at a glance and make sensible changes.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Review_Your_Transactions\"><\/span>Review Your Transactions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Just like a statement from your bank or credit card company, the \u201cTransactions\u201d tab lists the date, merchant, and amount for all incoming and outgoing money. This tab consolidates transactions from all of your connected accounts in one spot.<\/p>\n<p>You can also see the category, account, last digits of the account number, and the institution. So if you have more than one account connected, you can easily see what money came in and went out from where and when.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-708264\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/TransactionsTab-MoneyInExcel.png\" alt=\"Transactions Tab\" width=\"650\" height=\"215\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re familiar with\u00a0sorting and filtering in Microsoft Excel, the \u201cTransactions\u201d tab offers both of these for viewing specific transactions. Even though categories are populated for all transactions, by default, they are \u201cbest guesses\u201d and can include the \u201cUncategorized\u201d category.<\/p>\n<p>So if you would like to create more meaning and accuracy for your spending categories, click the arrow next to one and select another from the list.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-708265\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/TransactionsChangeCategory-MoneyInExcel.png\" alt=\"Change a Category for a transaction\" width=\"175\" height=\"366\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You can choose from a good selection of default categories that cover the most common types of spending. However, you can also create your own for more significant spending if you like. This is what we\u2019ll show you next.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Customize_Your_Categories\"><\/span>Customize Your Categories<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The \u201cCategories\u201d tab contains all default categories at the top, which cannot be changed. You can, if needed, use the arrow next to a \u201cCategory Type\u201d to change that. Category types include income, transfer, and expense.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-708270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/CategoriesDefault-MoneyInExcel.png\" alt=\"Default Categories in Money In Excel\" width=\"650\" height=\"280\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Below the defaults are \u201cCustom Categories\u201d that you can create.
