Justin Thomas intends to go through an individual training program to \u201cbecome a better person\u201d after he was picked up uttering a homophobic slur under his breath when he missed a putt at a tournament in Hawaii this month.<\/p>\n

Clothing brand Ralph Lauren ended its long-time sponsorship with Thomas following the incident two weeks ago, which the No. 3-ranked American golfer described as \u201chumiliating and embarrassing and it\u2019s not me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thomas has spoken to his other sponsors \u2014 Titleist, FootJoy and global bank Citi are among those listed on his official website \u2014 and hopes they will stand by him as he looks to educate himself and restore his reputation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a word I use,\u201d Thomas said Wednesday, referring to the slur he blurted out when missing a 5-foot par putt on the fourth hole of Sentry Tournament of Champions, \u201cbut for some reason it was in there and that\u2019s what I\u2019m trying to figure out \u2014 why it was in there.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd like I said, it\u2019s going to be part of this process and training program, whatever I need to do, not only to prove to myself but to prove to my sponsors and prove to the people who don\u2019t know who I am that that is indeed not the person I am.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ralph Lauren, which has sponsored Thomas since he turned pro, said it was \u201cdisheartened\u201d by his language and made its decision to end its association with the player because of the responsibility it has to its stakeholders.<\/p>\n

Speaking from the Abu Dhabi Championship, where he will be playing this week in a rare app<\/a>earance on the European Tour, Thomas said he was upset but respected Ralph Lauren\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cI spoke with them, along with all my sponsors, and although I apologized, just like it was then it\u2019s an opportunity for me to grow and I felt like it was something we could have done together and gone through that process,\u201d he said. \u201cThey just felt like they needed to move on so that\u2019s exactly what I\u2019m doing as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t disappointed,\u201d Thomas added, \u201cbecause I put them in a terrible position. I was just more upset. I had a great relationship with a lot of people there and like I said we had the opportunity to do it all together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pushed on the training program he intends to follow, Thomas said he would be keeping it \u201cat a personal level.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously people are going to be a part of that process,\u201d he said. \u201cBut what I\u2019m doing I\u2019d like to keep internally and just go through the appropriate steps to get where I need to be and want to be, so people understand that\u2019s not the person I am, the character I like to portray.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Abu Dhabi Championship starts Thursday and is Thomas\u2019 first event since the incident in Kapalua. He will be playing in the tournament for the first time in what will be only his fourth start in a regular European Tour event.<\/p>\n

Rory McIlroy will play in the same group as Thomas for the first two rounds at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, and does not expect the issue to affect the American\u2019s game<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cHe maybe won\u2019t be as ignorant to offend people \u2014 obviously what he said was offensive to a large portion of the population,\u201d McIlroy said. \u201cHe\u2019ll be better for it, he\u2019ll learn, he\u2019ll move on and he\u2019ll be just as good a golfer as he\u2019s always been.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd, if anything, it\u2019ll make him a better person than he already is, which is hard because he is already a great guy.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
