Bruce Springsteen kicked off Joe Biden\u2019s inauguration concert, as the first performer in the \u201cCelebrating America\u201d special hosted by Tom Hanks.<\/p>\n

Accompanied only by a guitar on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial \u2014 with the lit National Mall and Washington Monument beckoning in front of him \u2014 Springsteen, 71, offered a \u201csmall prayer\u201d for the country before serenading with his 1999 song \u201cLand of Hope and Dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hanks \u2014 who along with his wife, Rita Wilson, fought the coronavirus earlier last year \u2014 talked of witnessing \u201cdeep division\u201d and \u201crancor\u201d across the country in recent years.<\/p>\n

\u201cTonight we ponder the United States of America, the practice of our democracy, the foundations of our republic, the integrity of the constitution,\u201d as well as the \u201cdreams we share,\u201d Hanks, 64, said.<\/p>\n

Following Springsteen and Hanks, New Jersey native Jon Bon Jovi, 58, and his band performed The Beatles\u2019 hopeful tune \u201cHere Comes the Sun,\u201d from Miami.<\/p>\n

After a herald from US Army trumpets, President Joe Biden offered his own greeting from the base of Lincoln\u2019s statue.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve learned again that democracy is precious and, because of you, democracy has prevailed,\u201d he said. He went on to list issues the nation faces \u2014 the coronavirus pandemic, economic crises, racial injustice and more \u2014 and made a call for \u201cunity\u201d in order to defeat obstacles.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe question is: Are we up to it? Will we meet the moment like our forbearers have?\u201d he said. \u201cI believe we must and I believe we will.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biden\u2019s speech was followed by Ant Clemons and Justin Timberlake, who joined for a pre-recorded duet of soulful tune \u201cBetter Days,\u201d featuring Kirk Franklin as well as Black Pumas who performed \u201cColors\u201d from Austin, Texas.<\/p>\n

Dave Grohl, 52, of Foo Fighters paid tribute to \u201cunshakeable teachers\u201d like his own mother, Virginia, who \u201cface unprecedented challenges\u201d but still manage to \u201cenlighten our kids\u201d before performing a slowed-down \u201cTimes Like These.\u201d<\/p>\n

Broadway stars Betty Buckley, Vanessa Williams, Anthony Rapp<\/a>, Wayne Brady and more also joined for a rousing mashup of \u201cSeasons of Love\u201d (from \u201cRent\u201d) and \u201cLet the Sun Shine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later, from Los Angeles, 28-year-old singer Demi Lovato \u2014 sporting her new<\/a> short, pink pixie cut \u2014 served up an energetic take on \u201cLovely Day\u201d with help from celebs and everyday Americans who beamed in as her background vocalists.<\/p>\n

And for the finale, pop star Katy Perry \u2014 elegantly wrapped in white \u2014 blasted her 2010 hit \u201cFirework\u201d as pyrotechnics lit up the Washington Monument.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
