For Wednesday\u2019s inauguration, first lady Dr. Jill Biden wore a matching dress and overcoat by the New York City-based brand Markarian.<\/p>\n

Amid a sea of purple-toned looks, Dr. Biden, 69, wore an \u201cocean blue\u201d wool tweed look, according to a press release from the brand. <\/p>\n

The color blue was chosen to reflect \u201ctrust, confidence, and stability,\u201d the release read, and was \u201ccrafted by a small team in the heart of New York City\u2019s Garment Center,\u201d then hand-finished by designer Alexandra O\u2019Neill at her West Village studio. She finished the look off with Jimmy Choo heels, a silk face mask also by Markarian and Wing & Weft gloves handmade in New York City.<\/p>\n

With velvet trimmings on the coat\u2019s lapel and an all-over dusting of Swarovski crystals (as well as a pearl-and-crystal encrusted neckline), the look\u2019s overall effect was just the right touch of glimmer and glamour for the celebration.<\/p>\n

Dr. Biden\u2019s sartorial choices reflect her penchant not only for soothing hues such as aqua and pink done up in classic, streamlined silhouettes, but for American designers who commit to sustainability.<\/p>\n

Markarian operates on a made-to-order basis so as to reduce waste. And the ensemble she wore to Tuesday evening\u2019s ceremony honoring the 400,000 American lives lost to COVID-19 was designed by New York City\u2019s Jonathan Cohen, a designer also at the forefront of sustainability in the fashion industry. <\/p>\n
