In the southern hemisphere, a star was seen erupting within a small, fuzzy patch of the night sky.<\/p>\n<p id=\"743b\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Unfortunately, no records survived telling of this celestial event south of the equator. However, astronomers have now turned the mighty gaze of the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cl jg\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/mystery-of-dark-matter-uncovered-by-hubble-and-vlt-6f405e80a653?source=friends_link&amp;sk=f9fd6d46e512263d5b44c9e125e9728a\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a>\u00a0to examine the remnants of this titanic explosion, called 1E 0102.2\u2013729. Image credit: NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"3bb5\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">By studying images of 1E 0102.2\u20137219 taken by the Hubble Space Telescope 10 years apart, astronomers were able to see how the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cl jg\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/mysterious-blue-ring-nebula-reveals-secrets-of-binary-stars\/\">nebula<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>changed over time.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1a2c\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Knots within the nebula move at different speeds and directions from the center of the blast, at average velocities of 3.2 million kph (almost two million MPH). At that speed, it would be possible to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> from the Earth to the Moon and back in just 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>[Read:\u00a0<span dir=\"auto\">How Netflix shapes mainstream culture, explained by data<\/span>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"7fb0\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Earlier studies of 1E 0102.2\u20137219 concluded the blast was seen on<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cl jg\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/KiTwFYlzE6Y\">Earth<\/a>\u00a0between 2000 and 1000 years before our time. Ionized oxygen is often used as a tracer since it glows most brightly in visible light.<\/p>\n<p id=\"523c\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cThe suspected neutron star was identified in observations with the European Southern Observatory\u2019s Very Large Telescope in Chile, in combination with data from NASA\u2019s Chandra X-ray Observatory,\u201d<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cl jg\" href=\"https:\/\/esahubble.org\/news\/heic2102\/\">The Hubble Team reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1a1a\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cl jg\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/meet-quark-matter-a-new-state-of-being-bdac4afdf4be?source=friends_link&amp;sk=75a6513363f26fcb20d738b14523499f\">neutron star<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(likely) left behind by the explosion was also seen racing away from the center of the blast at more than three million KPH (1.86 million MPH).<\/p>\n<p id=\"3520\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cThat is pretty fast and at the extreme end of how fast we think a neutron star can be moving, even if it got a kick from the supernova explosion. These collisions slowed down some clumps, affecting earlier observations.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6289\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cA prior study compared images taken years apart with two different cameras on Hubble, the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 and the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). But our study compares data taken with the same camera, the ACS, making the comparison much more robust; the knots were much easier to track using the same instrument. It\u2019s a testament to the longevity of Hubble that we could do such a clean comparison of images taken 10 years apart,\u201d<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cl jg\" href=\"https:\/\/hubblesite.org\/contents\/news-releases\/2021\/news-2021-02\">Danny Milisavljevic<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>of Purdue University explains.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f144\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Around the year 320, the Roman Empire was crumbling, and<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cl jg\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/first-ai-model-of-the-universe-knows-science-it-was-never-taught-cd8388564f8c?source=friends_link&amp;sk=2b7509bcebf3022507a2871a745705cd\">science<\/a>\u00a0was rejected by a large percentage of the population.
