“#Twitter<\/a> locks Chinese embassy’s account over Uighur post<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Twitter froze the account of China\u2019s US embassy after it posted a tweet about Uighur Muslims that violated the platform\u2019s policy against \u201cdehumanization.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the Jan. 7 tweet, the embassy claimed that Uighur women in China\u2019s Xinjiang region had been \u201cemancipated\u201d and were \u201cno longer baby-making machines.\u201d<\/p>\n

The post was an app<\/a>arent attempt to defend China\u2019s treatment of the ethnic minority group amid international criticism of its crackdown on the Uighur people, which the US State Department called a genocide this week.<\/p>\n

Twitter said it has temporarily locked the @ChineseEmbinUS<\/a> account \u2014 which hasn\u2019t posted since Jan. 8 \u2014 until the offending tweet is deleted. The post is currently hidden from public view, but Twitter requires users to manually remove tweets that violate its policies.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve taken action on the Tweet you referenced for violating our policy against dehumanization, where it states: We prohibit the dehumanization of a group of people based on their religion, caste, age, disability, serious disease, national origin, race, or ethnicity,\u201d a Twitter spokesperson said in an email Thursday.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s foreign ministry took issue with Twitter\u2019s move, saying the Communist Party government has a \u201cresponsibility and obligation\u201d to combat \u201cdisinformation\u201d about its activities in the Xinjiang region.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe find Twitter\u2019s restriction on the embassy account baffling and hope it will uphold the principle of objectivity and impartiality instead of applying double standard,\u201d foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said at a press briefing<\/a> Thursday. \u201cGreater efforts should be made to distinguish between disinformation, rumors and lies from facts and truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Twitter has moved more aggressively to enforce its content policies against government officials in recent weeks.<\/p>\n

The San Francisco-based company confirmed its action against the Chinese embassy about two weeks after it permanently banned then-president Donald Trump in the wake of the Capitol riots \u2014 a move that raised thorny questions about the power of tech platforms to police official communications.<\/p>\n

Twitter is blocked in China, but Beijing\u2019s diplomats and state media use the site to fiercely defend the country\u2019s positions as part of a strategy that\u2019s become known as \u201cWolf Warrior\u201d diplomacy.<\/p>\n
