President Biden released his COVID war plan Thursday, promising \u201chelp is on the way.\u201d Alas, it\u2019s far from clear the strategy will meet the challenge.<\/p>\n

The 198-page plan vows to \u201cspare no effort to ensure Americans can get vaccinated quickly, effectively and equitably.\u201d Washington will spur manufacturers to boost vaccine production, via the Defense Production Act, and target \u201csupply shortfalls.\u201d The new prez signed several executive orders to launch the program.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s all great, but Biden\u2019s goal of 100 million vaccines in 100 days, or 1 million a day, as Betsy McCaughey noted Thursday, won\u2019t create herd immunity by July. For that, the nation needs to vaccinate at least 1.8 million<\/em> people daily. And reaching even 1 million a day is far from certain.<\/p>\n

When a reporter pointed out that 1 million is only 10 percent higher than the current number of daily doses, Biden bristled with his typical \u201cGimme a break, man.\u201d Is the media<\/a> honeymoon already over? One can only hope.<\/p>\n

The plan also puts a high priority on ensuring \u201cequity, including across racial, ethnic and rural\/urban lines.\u201d How about just ensuring everyone gets vaxxed?<\/p>\n

Shots meant for higher-priority recipients can\u2019t be allowed to go to waste if those folks aren\u2019t available but should go instead to anyone. That\u2019s the practice in Israel, where nearly a quarter of the population has had at least one dose \u2014 compared with only about 4 percent of Americans.<\/p>\n

Nor is it a good sign that Biden aides are already rolling out excuses and blaming President Donald Trump\u2019s folks: \u201cWhat we\u2019re inheriting is so much worse than we could have imagined,\u201d whined new White House COVID coordinator Jeff Zients.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Mayor Bill de Blasio warned again Thursday of \u201ca profound shortage\u201d of the vaccine in the city. \u201cWe continue to have to cancel app<\/a>ointments rather than book more appointments,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

And while he claimed the city\u2019s vaccination program is \u201cfiring on all cylinders,\u201d a column by Allan Ripp in Thursday\u2019s Post painted a truly nightmarish picture of what it\u2019s really like to try to get jabbed here.<\/p>\n

Yes, getting the vaccine into people\u2019s arms fast<\/em> is an enormous challenge. But countries like Israel have done it. With 4,000 Americans dying daily, leaders like Biden, de Blasio and Gov. Andrew Cuomo need to step up fast \u2014 and meet that challenge.\n <\/div>\n
