Carole Baskin<\/a> became a household name in 2020 thanks to\u00a0Netflix<\/a>\u2018s release of\u00a0\u201cTiger King<\/a>.\u201d But the big cat enthusiast still claims the streamer delivered a portrayal of her that wasn\u2019t genuine.<\/p>\n

Baskin spoke to Fox News<\/a> this week where she reflected on skyrocketing to fame seemingly overnight. Shortly after \u201cTiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness<\/a>\u201d was released in March 2020, viewers jumped to question Baskin\u2019s motives, a result brought on in part by claims made by her rival on the series<\/a>,\u00a0Joe Exotic<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Baskin, 59, said Netflix left her blindsided.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt betrayed by them,\u201d Baskin admits. \u201cWe worked with the producers for five years. When they came to us they said what they were working on was \u2018Blackfish\u2019 for big cats. \u2018Blackfish\u2019 showed just a horrible, horrible life for dolphins and whales being kept in these concrete pools. After it, the whole industry of whale shows and stealing whales and putting them in aquariums came to a halt. To do the same for big cats, we thought [a documentary] exposing\u00a0how the cub petting is so cruel would be great.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were all on board,\u201d Baskin continued. \u201cIn fact, they said the name of their show was going to be \u2018Stolen Wildlife\u2019 and they said Joe would be in it but in five minutes of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Baskin claims producers failed to mention their decision to careen\u00a0off course. Instead of exposing big cat cruelty, she said Netflix created a show that spawned a feud with Exotic<\/a> that doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey totally lied to us about what their end product was going to be,\u201d she said. \u201cThe whole premise behind [the show] was that it was a feud. For a feud, you have to have two people that are feuding. I\u2019ve never had a conversation with Joe. I\u2019ve never even spoken to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Much like Baskin, Exotic went viral immedia<\/a>tely following the show\u2019s release. He\u2019s garnered a fanbase in his own right\u00a0for the quirky and at times downright outlandish claims he made on the show, some of which accused Baskin of playing a role in the 1997 disappearance and subsequent death of her first husband<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While Exotic is currently serving a 22-year prison sentence for his role in a murder-for-hire plot to target Baskin, she claims the rivalry \u201cTiger King\u201d viewers saw is far from reality.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I do and what he hated for me for is I go after all of the animal exploiters that are exploiting big cats. He was one of many of them who have threatened to kill me. It\u2019s just he\u2019s the one they were finally able to catch and put behind bars. But it was never personal for me. I never said anything personal against Joe,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, Baskin said she feels Netflix was \u201ctrying to sell a feud\u201d when it came to creating \u201cTiger King.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think they had to paint me into this kind of Karen figure that just drove him mad and that\u2019s how this whole thing happ<\/a>ened,\u201d she claimed. \u201cKaren\u201d is a\u00a0pejorative term\u00a0often used to describe a White, usually middle-aged woman thought to be acting entitled.<\/p>\n

Baskin has also dedicated a page on her business\u2019s website<\/a> to combat some of the alleged \u201clies\u201d from the series.<\/p>\n

Netflix declined to comment when reached by Fox News Thursday. The series filmmakers Rebecca Chaiklin and Eric Goode did not respond to Fox News\u2019 requests, but stood by their depiction of Baskin in an interview with the LA Times<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would just say we were completely forthright with the characters. With any project that goes on for five years, things evolve and change, and we followed it as any good storyteller does,\u201d Chaiklin said.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Goode claimed Baskin spoke about her personal life and claimed the show is \u201cnot a \u2018Blackfish\u2019 because of the things she spoke about. She certainly wasn\u2019t coerced.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite her frustrations with the public\u2019s persona of her, Baskin\u2019s fame from the series did help attract some lucrative deals for the star. In addition to joining \u201cDancing with the Stars<\/a>\u201d and creating a Cameo account,\u00a0the big cat advocate is working on a new series<\/a> that she says will focus on her life\u2019s work.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are currently in the process with Thinkfactory for a series. The series would be what we actually do at Big Cat Rescue. We expose the people who are abusing big cats. We expose it to the public and we expose it to law enforcement and then we put pressure on law enforcement until they actually do their jobs, which means typically bringing these people to court, taking away their licenses, putting the animals into legitimate sanctuaries,\u201d she said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
