\n Mayor Bill de Blasio said Friday that cuts to the NYPD\u2019s $6 billion budget would be \u201cvery, very substantial\u201d amid calls to slash $1 billion from the department\u2019s coffers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re working with the City Council right now. We don\u2019t have a final dollar figure, but we\u2019re going to do something very, very substantial,\u201d de Blasio said on WNYC radio\u2019s \u201cThe Brian Lehrer Show,\u201d adding, \u201cWe\u2019ll know more in the next few days.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we are moving in a very good direction,\u201d the mayor said.<\/p>\n

De Blasio previously promised to cut an unspecified amount of funding from the NYPD and said it will be shifted to youth initiatives and social<\/a> services.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am convinced in the next days \u2014 I\u2019m very hopeful that we\u2019ll get to a positive outcome with the Council, a major shift in funds from the NYPD to youth services and other community needs,\u201d the mayor said on WNYC.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, de Blasio during the same interview said that regardless of the reform initiatives there will be NYPD layoffs if the city doesn\u2019t get financial aid from Washington, DC, or the state to stem the city\u2019s coronavirus-induced budget crisis.<\/p>\n

He threatened there would be cuts to \u201cevery single agency, uniform and civilian\u201d \u201d in order to close the $1 billion budget gap caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, de Blasio said 22,000 municipal employees across all city agencies could lose their jobs to create $1 billion in cuts needed to balance the budget.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe 22,000 layoff which again we hope we\u2019ll never have to experience, is every single agency, uniform and civilian,\u201d the mayor said Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cStart with the assumption of the percentage each agency is of our budget,\u201d de Blasio said, as he explained that \u201cthe NYPD in the civilian employees is over 50,000 out of 380,000 [civilian employees across all agencies].\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a big chunk of the budget,\u201d Hizzoner said. \u201cSo, if we got to that point of layoffs it\u2019s going to affect the NYPD \u2014 it\u2019s going to affect all agencies.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio called it \u201ctragic\u201d and \u201chorrible\u201d that \u201cif we don\u2019t get another source of revenue we literally have no choice but to start cutting back our workforce which I do not want to do one bit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m trying to find another source of revenue and there\u2019s only two places I can get it: Washington, which isn\u2019t acting and Albany, which could give us the borrowing authority to help us tide over and I\u2019m hoping to achieve that in the next few days,\u201d he said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
