\n Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin and Mississippi State coach Mike Leach have joined the lobby to remove the Confederate symbol in the state flag of Mississippi as racial tensions rise throughout the country.<\/p>\n

Last week, SEC and NCAA announced that postseason events wouldn\u2019t take place in the state until Mississippi changed its flag. Kiffin and Leach joined a contingency of 46 coaches and administrators across eight public universities in Mississippi and addressed the state legislature on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe removed the flag from our campus five years ago, so we\u2019ve made it clear that it doesn\u2019t represent who we are at Ole Miss,\u201d Kiffin told ESPN. \u201cToday is another big step in doing our part to move the state forward and ensure a more welcoming environment for everyone.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe purpose of a state flag is to create pride and enthusiasm amongst the citizens,\u201d Leach said. \u201cIt should also create great energy to elevate the economy, education and athletics. The current flag doesn\u2019t do that. We need a state flag that everyone is proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n

The flag\u2019s current design features three horizontal strip<\/a>es in blue, white and red with a box in the top left corner containing the Confederate emblem. It is the only state flag that features such insignia.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is past time for change to be made to the flag of the State of Mississippi,\u201d Commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement last week. \u201cOur students deserve an opportunity to learn and compete in environments that are inclusive and welcoming to all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mississippi State running back Kylin Hill also vowed he \u201cwon\u2019t be representing this State anymore\u201d unless they \u201cchange the flag.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI meant that\u2026I\u2019m tired,\u201d Hill wrote on Twitter<\/a>. \u201cUnlike rest (sic) I was born in this state ? and I knwo (sic) what the flag mean.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leach, 59, was the head coach at Washington State for the past eight seasons before he was hired by Ole Miss in January. The old-school coach from Cody, Wy. has been a controversial figure, drawing public ire in April after posting an image on Twitter of a person knitting what app<\/a>eared to be a noose.<\/p>\n

Mississippi State athletic director John Cohen announced Leach would participate in \u201clistening sessions\u201d to \u201cexpand his cultural awareness of Mississippi\u201d and denounced the coach\u2019s actions, calling the tweet unacceptable.<\/p>\n

Kiffin, 45, was hired by Ole Miss in December and most recently served as head coach for Florida Atlantic University. He has openly voiced support of his players\u2019 campaign to move a statue of a Confederate soldier from the campus.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is extremely important to me and to our players,\u201d he said of the flag. \u201cTime to change!\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
