“#\u2018The Da Vinci Code\u2019 Stage Play Arriving Next Year, Because Sure, Why Not?<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Remember\u00a0The Da Vinci Code<\/em><\/strong>? Dan Brown<\/strong>\u2018s obscenely popular bestseller about a puzzle-solving murder mystery involving a conspiracy within the Catholic church? Well, it\u2019s back \u2013 in stage play form. Sadly, this won\u2019t be a musical. Instead, it\u2019s being described as a \u201cstage thriller,\u201d and the current plan is to open the production in the U.K. next April.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know about you, but I got\u00a0very<\/em> excited when I saw the news<\/a> over at Broadway.com that there was going to be a\u00a0Da Vinci Code<\/em> stage play. Especially when I saw this promo art:<\/p>\n

The reason for my excitement: I immedia<\/a>tely assumed this was going to be a musical, and I figured that device in Robert Langdon\u2019s hand up there was a microphone (you know \u2013 to sing into). I was deflated when I read that this, in fact,\u00a0isn\u2019t<\/em> going to be a musical, and realized that the thing in Langdon\u2019s hand is just the\u00a0cryptex that was featured in the book and film adaptation.<\/p>\n

Come on, don\u2019t deny it: you would absolutely be interested in a\u00a0Da Vinci Code<\/em> musical, if only for the absurdity factor. Unfortunately, we\u2019ll have to settle for a song-free stage adaptation. The play will make its world premiere on a U.K. tour in 2021, opening first at the Churchill Theatre in Bromley on April 3, 2021<\/strong>. The book was adapted for the stage by Rachel Wagstaff and Duncan Abel, and will be\u00a0directed by Luke Sheppard.<\/p>\n

Published in 2003,\u00a0The Da Vinci Code<\/em> became a publishing phenomenon, and inspired a 2006 film directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks. In\u00a0The Da Vinci Code<\/em>, \u201cA murder in Paris\u2019 Louvre Museum and cryptic clues in some of Leonardo da Vinci\u2019s most famous paintings lead to the discovery of a religious mystery. For 2,000 years a secret society closely guards information that \u2013 should it come to light \u2014 could rock the very foundations of Christianity.\u201d I have no idea how well this will translate to the stage \u2013 so much of the story involves characters moving from one location to the next, and you can\u2019t really do that on stage. I also wonder if anyone even still cares about\u00a0The Da Vinci Code<\/em> these days. But I guess we\u2019ll find out next year.<\/p>\n
