Alan Tudyk\u2019s acting resume is peppered with sci-fi roles: \u201cFirefly,\u201d \u201cRogue One: A Star Wars Story,\u201d \u201cDoom Patrol,\u201d \u201cCon Man.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s safe to say however, that he\u2019s never played an extraterrestrial who\u2019s got a thing for \u201cLaw & Order.\u201d<\/p>\n

Welcome to the world of \u201cResident Alien,\u201d Syfy\u2019s new dramedy series<\/a> with Tudyk in the titular role.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m part of the sci-fi world but haven\u2019t ever been on Syfy, the channel, before [in a series created for the network],\u201d says Tudyk, 49. \u201cI did a show I created independently with the help of sic-fi fans called \u2018Con Man,\u2019 about the [sci-fi] convention world \u2014 and a guy who\u2019s on a show that was cancelled and his life has been going to these conventions. That ran for two seasons on Syfy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cResident Alien,\u201d though, is a far cry from \u201cCon Man\u201d or, for that matter, any of Tudyk\u2019s past roles in the genre. In the series, premiering Wednesday (Jan. 27) at 10 p.m., he plays a creepy-looking outer-space denizen who crash-lands in Colorado with the intention of killing everyone on Earth. He assumes the human form of a hapless doctor named Harry Vanderspeigle \u2014 but, four months later, remains stuck in the snowy, picturesque town of Patience, where he\u2019s recruited as the local doctor\u2013 replacing his predecessor, who died under mysterious circumstances.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are certain challenges in the role that are exciting as far as the physicality of an alien posing as a human and learning how to work this body for the first time,\u201d Tudyk says. \u201cHe replicates the human body \u2014 it\u2019s not like a \u2018Body Snatchers\u2019 thing \u2014 and has to learn the language.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe crash-lands here and doesn\u2019t expect to have to know anything about these people so he\u2019s not equipped,\u201d he says. \u201cHe knows a lot about the universe\u2026but nothing about them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The series, adapted by Chris Sheridan (\u201cFamily Guy\u201d) from the Dark Horse Comics series, combines subtle humor with drama as Harry, who still intends to kill off mankind, finds himself not only learning how to be human but also knee-deep in a murder investigation. And there\u2019s that pesky local kid, Max (Judah Prehn), the only one in town who sees Harry in his extraterrestrial skin.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a stunt double who does more of the stunt-y work; whenever you see the alien in reflections that\u2019s a person who isn\u2019t me wearing a mask,\u201d Tudyk says. \u201cBut when it comes to the acting, it\u2019s me \u2014 so there were a lot of long days in the makeup chair.\u201d<\/p>\n

Co-stars include Sara Tomko as Harry\u2019s assistant at the health clinic; Corey Reynolds as a cynical sheriff; Levi Fiehler as the touchy-feely mayor; and Alice Wetterlund as a popular Patience bartender.<\/p>\n

The 10-episode series was shot in Vancouver. \u201cOne of the first days of shooting we were out on what is the lake house in the show,\u201d Tudyk says. \u201cIt was actually the ocean there\u2026and there was an orca family surfacing and swimming by and they were like, \u2018Cut!\u2019 It was like, \u2018Can we get the gorgeous natural beauty out of the shot?!\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n

Tudyk says that Harry will change drastically as he familiarizes himself with his surroundings and with the people of Patience.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis arc for the first season is known fairly quickly, by the second and third episodes,\u201d he says. \u201cThe human form he\u2019s taken starts to play upon him and the way he\u2019s perceived in the world. He starts to dream, he starts to feel\u2026and that\u2019s what he\u2019s wrestling with throughout the first season as he gets to know humans and becomes more human.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will change his outlook on destroying all of humankind while he struggles with doing his duty.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
