\n Vice President Mike Pence on Friday defended hosting re-election rallies for President Trump as portions of the country are reporting big spikes in new coronavirus infections.<\/p>\n

Pence cited the Constitution\u2019s freedoms of speech and assembly and noted the presidential election in November.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, the freedom of speech, the right to peaceably assemble is enshrined in the Constitution of the United States. And we have an election coming up this fall,\u201d Pence said in response to a reporter\u2019s question at the first coronavirus task force briefing in months.<\/p>\n

Trump and Pence hosted their first re-election rally since March 2 on Saturday in Tulsa, Oklahoma. About 6,200 supporters participated \u2014 far fewer than expected, and most declined to wear masks given out by the Trump campaign. This week, Trump also spoke to hundreds at an Arizona church.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven in a health crisis, the American people don\u2019t forfeit our constitutional rights, and working with state officials \u2014 as we did in Oklahoma and as we did in Arizona \u2014 we\u2019re creating settings where people can choose to participate in the political process and, and we\u2019ll continue to do that, Pence said.<\/p>\n

Pence said he and Trump \u201cbelieve that taking proper steps as we\u2019ve created screening at recent events and giving people the very best counsel that we have, we still want to give people the freedom to participate in the political process and we respect that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump told reporters this month that he plans to host additional rallies in Arizona, Florida and North Carolina.<\/p>\n

According to the Trump campaign, six Tulsa advance staffers tested positive for COVID-19 shortly before Trump and Pence arrived. Two aides who attended the rally later tested positive as well.<\/p>\n

Tulsa is among the areas of the US that have experienced a spike in coronavirus cases this week as states reopen following strict restrictions on businesses and public gatherings.<\/p>\n

But Pence said he was \u201cpleased to say that now the better part of a week since we were in Oklahoma, I think their positivity rate has actually declined as of today, and that\u2019s a great testament to the fact that people are using common sense.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
