\u201cIn sickness and in health\u201d never meant more.<\/p>\n

Emergency room patients Elizabeth Kerr and fianc\u00e9 Simon O\u2019Brien didn\u2019t plan on a short engagement. But when COVID-19 nurses told them, \u201cthis might be your only chance,\u201d the fatally sick pair decided it was now \u2014 or possibly never. <\/p>\n

\u201cThose are words I never, ever want hear again,\u201d Kerr, 31, told Reuters, from a COVID-19 ward at the University Hospital in Milton Keynes, a borough about 50 miles northwest of London. <\/p>\n

The lovers were wed in the intensive care unit, a few days after they arrived at the ER in the same ambulance. Kerr, a nurse, and paramedic O\u2019Brien, 36, had tested positive for COVID-19 just days before \u2014 and months before their June wedding date. <\/p>\n

Kerr recalled that her husband, critically low on blood oxygen, barely held on while nurses scrambled to find a spare marriage license. <\/p>\n

Kerr and O\u2019Brien were married at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 15, accompanied by nurse Hannah Cannon, witness to the ceremony on behalf of family and friends who were not allowed to be in the quarantined unit. The catering department also provided cake to celebrate the occasion.<\/p>\n

The honeymoon period was short lived as O\u2019Brien\u2019s vitals fell rapidly after saying \u201cI do,\u201d immedia<\/a>tely forcing him into the care of mechanical ventilation and chemical sedation overnight. <\/p>\n

\u201cI was trying to get back [my] energy, which I couldn\u2019t afford, but I tried my best to really fight for my breath back,\u201d O\u2019Brien said of the arduous ceremony. <\/p>\n

The newlyweds have since reunited \u2014 and kissed, finally \u2014 following an upswing in O\u2019Brien\u2019s condition, though both remain attached to oxygen masks. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got a wedding story that can trump anybody\u2019s,\u201d Kerr said. <\/p>\n

For as many weddings that have been put on hold by the pandemic, stories like Kerr and O\u2019Brien\u2019s are silver linings in a grim year. Similarly, Texas man Carlos Muniz made a miraculous recovery from the virus after nurses arranged for him to wed his fianc\u00e9e Grace Leimann from his hospital bed. <\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of people started volunteering for it \u2014 and before you knew it, every nurse in the unit knew about it and was trying to figure out ways to make it more special,\u201d\u00a0Holdridge said<\/a>\u00a0in an emotional Facebook video. \u201cWhat better way to help him recover than to fulfill their dream of getting married together?\u201d\n <\/div>\n
