Gregory Sierra, a longtime character actor who app<\/a>eared in television shows and movies<\/a>, most notably on \u201cBarney Miller\u201d and \u201cSanford and Son,\u201d died Jan. 4 in Laguna Woods, Calif., from cancer. He was 83.<\/p>\n

A New York native, Sierra\u2019s breakthrough came when he was cast as Julio Fuentes, the Puerto Rican neighbor to Redd Foxx\u2019s Fred Sanford on \u201cSanford and Son.\u201d<\/p>\n

After he left that series, Sierra played one of the original detectives working out of the diverse 12th Precinct in Greenwich Village on ABC\u2019s\u00a0\u201cBarney Miller.\u201d He was written out of the series after the second season to star in \u201cA.E.S. Hudson Street,\u201d a sitcom about a frantic emergency room, but it lasted just six episodes.<\/p>\n

Sierra also appeared as a radical Jewish vigilante in \u201cArchie Is Branded,\u201d a 1973 episode of CBS\u2019\u00a0\u201cAll in the Family,\u201d wherein someone paints a swastika on Archie\u2019s door. The episode, which ends in silence, was among the most memorable from the long-running series.<\/p>\n

Born on Jan. 25, 1937 in Spanish Harlem, Sierra attended the Cathedral College of the Immaculate Conception, in Brooklyn. After school, he worked with the National Shakespeare Company and in the New York Shakespeare Festival before moving to Los Angeles, where he started getting bit parts in television and supporting roles in movies like \u201cBeneath the Planet of the Apes,\u201d \u201cGetting Straight,\u201d \u201cPapillon\u201d and \u201cThe Towering Inferno.\u201d<\/p>\n

He had recurring roles in multiple television shows, including \u201cHill Street Blues,\u201d \u201cMiami Vice,\u201d and \u201cMurder, She Wrote,\u201d and made appearances in a slew of other series.<\/p>\n

\u201cMiami Vice\u201d star Edward James Olmos tweeted<\/a> that he read news<\/a> of Sierra\u2019s death and wept. \u201cGregory Sierra will forever be with us,\u201d Olmos wrote. \u201cThose that knew him. His laughter. His wit. His kindness. His extraordinary artistic ability. He was a friend, a Mentor, a force of nature that I was so grateful to have known & worked with. RIP.\u201d\n <\/div>\n
