{"id":161803,"date":"2021-01-24T04:27:52","date_gmt":"2021-01-24T01:27:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/nyc-does-too-little-covid-testing-to-open-schools-teachers-union\/"},"modified":"2021-01-24T04:27:52","modified_gmt":"2021-01-24T01:27:52","slug":"nyc-does-too-little-covid-testing-to-open-schools-teachers-union","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/nyc-does-too-little-covid-testing-to-open-schools-teachers-union\/","title":{"rendered":"#NYC does too little COVID testing to open schools: teachers&#8217; union"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#NYC does too little COVID testing to open schools: teachers&#8217; union<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/01\/Michael-Mulgrew-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The city will not be able to open its middle- and high schools because it lacks sufficient\u00a0ability to test students and staff for COVID-19, the leader of the teachers\u2019 union says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe city is barely managing all the aspects of the current random testing program and tracing requirements,\u201d\u00a0Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers, said in a statement to The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are not prepared to handle any additional schools.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After closing all schools for three weeks, the city Department of Education in December reopened only elementary schools for grades K to 5 and District 75 schools for children with disabilities, offering in-person classes up to five days a week.<\/p>\n<p>In doing so, the DOE agreed to test 20 percent of students and staff in\u00a0850 schools and early childhood education centers once a week. Kids and employees testing positive for COVID-19 are sent home to quarantine, and classrooms or buildings are closed for as long as 10 days.<\/p>\n<p>But middle and high schools stayed shut, conducting all instruction remotely.<\/p>\n<p>Mulgrew\u2019s comments indicated those schools for grades 6 to 12 may not reopen for the rest of the school year until testing can ramp up significantly.<\/p>\n<p>DOE spokesman Nathaniel Styer\u00a0said the city is aiming to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are consistently testing beyond the 20 percent threshold each week.\u00a0By every measure, our <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach is working, as New York City remains the only major school system to offer in-person instruction to hundreds of thousands of children,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look forward to adapting our successful testing model to serve our middle and high school students as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Styer would not estimate a date for a further reopening.<\/p>\n<p>Mulgrew told the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/low-supply-of-covid-19-vaccine-could-delay-return-to-full-time-in-person-learning-in-nyc-schools-11611262343\">Wall Street Journal l<\/a>ast week that the looming vaccine shortage, affecting educators and other essential workers, may further jeopardize efforts to return schools to normal any time soon.\n            <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
