“#\u2018Clueless\u2019 is 25! Everything you didn\u2019t know about the iconic film<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Twenty-five years ago this July, the film world was forever changed by two little words: As if!<\/p>\n

Amy Heckerling\u2019s \u201cClueless,\u201d a riff on the Jane Austen novel \u201cEmma,\u201d starred 18-year-old Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz, a Beverly Hills teenager who ruled her high school with equal parts charm and obliviousness \u2014 and a whole new lingo. Co-stars Stacey Dash, Donald Faison, the late Brittany Murphy and Breckin Meyer were all key players, as was a then-unknown love interest by the name of Paul Rudd.<\/p>\n

Murphy, who mysteriously died of pneumonia complications and drug intoxication in 2009 at 32, played a key role in \u201cClueless\u201d as newcomer Tai. \u201cIt just breaks my heart \u2014 I can\u2019t make heads or tails of it,\u201d Heckerling says of Murphy\u2019s death. \u201cIt didn\u2019t make any sense. It still doesn\u2019t.\u201d Twink Caplan, an associate producer on the film who also played the delighfully daffy teacher Miss Geist, says everyone on set adored Murphy. \u201cShe would have loved that this movie was so big,\u201d Caplan says. \u201cIt made her immortal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Released on July 19, 1995, the movie kicked off a glut of Austen adaptations and gave us quotable quips (\u201cYou\u2019re a virgin who can\u2019t drive!\u201d) that made the film a timeless classic.<\/p>\n

\u201cGirls and women all over the world respond to the movie to this day because the characters have this sense of themselves,\u201d says costume designer Mona May. \u201cEven though Cher had flaws and was self-centered, her actions come from trying to improve the world as she\u2019s improving herself.\u201d<\/p>\n

In honor of the film\u2019s 25th anniversary, Heckerling, Caplan and May share their favorite \u201cClueless\u201d trivia.<\/p>\n

The screenplay initially faced pushback for having a female lead.<\/strong>
<\/br>
\nDirector Amy Heckerling: [\u201cClueless\u201d] was originally in development at another studio, and there was a lot of resistance to having a main character being a female. That meant that you would have a smaller audience and less of a budget.<\/p>\n

In Heckerling\u2019s utopian Beverly Hills, there was \u201cno racism.\u201d<\/strong>
<\/br>
\nAH: It was always my desire to create an alternate universe where there\u2019s no racism, everybody is having fun, everybody has money to buy things. When somebody comes in from the outside, they take her under their wing and dress her up. That isn\u2019t the real world. The high school we shot in, [Ulysses S.] Grant HS, had just had a shooting a few weeks before.<\/p>\n

Cher\u2019s high school is named for Louisa May Alcott\u2019s dad.<\/strong>
<\/br>
\nAH: I was named after Amy in \u201cLittle Women.\u201d And I was seeing Bronson Pinchot at the time. I found out his middle name was Alcott! He was named for Bronson Alcott, who was Louisa May Alcott\u2019s father \u2014 one of those free-thinkers. He was very into women getting an education.<\/p>\n

Costume designer Mona May wasn\u2019t a fan of the fashions of the film\u2019s era.<\/strong>
<\/br>
\nMM: [The style] was all grunge then, and kids looked horrible. This was really the antidote to that. What Amy wanted to do was not only have high fashion be almost a character in the film, but that it be transformed through the eyes of the girls. There wasn\u2019t a lot of money, so I was taking the high fashion and pairing it with something from the mall. Now, that\u2019s [de rigueur] \u2014 the $5,000 purse with ripped jeans.<\/p>\n

The screenplay\u2019s sassy slang came from a wide range of sources.<\/strong>
<\/br>
\nAH: There was a professor at UCLA who would get together linguistics students and compile a list of slang. That\u2019s where \u201cshe\u2019s a Monet\u201d came from. There was ethnic slang, rap music slang. I put in some Yiddish: When Dionne is happ<\/a>y that boys were responding to Tai, she says she\u2019s kvelling. For Christian [played by Justin Walker], there had been a resurgence of 1950s Rat Pack stuff, clubs with swing dancing. Cab Calloway published a jive talk dictionary I used.<\/p>\n

Actress Twink Caplan: Amy\u2019s dialogue should be anthologized. Like when they\u2019re talking about virginity and Cher says, \u201cYou see how picky I am about my shoes, and they only go on my feet!\u201d Or someone is \u201chymenally challenged.\u201d I used to say Amy was the female Woody Allen, but he\u2019s getting so much flack, I can\u2019t anymore.<\/p>\n

When Silverstone mispronounces \u201cHaitians\u201d in her debate speech, that isn\u2019t acting.<\/strong>
<\/br>
\nAH: The first day, we started with Alicia\u2019s Haitians speech. I ran around to everybody that was trying to go up and correct her pronunciation and [stopped them]. I felt like she had a certain confidence in the way she was saying it.<\/p>\n

The crew loved Paul Rudd\u2019s kiss scene.<\/strong>
<\/br>
\nAH: He could be vulnerable, he could be a nerd, he could be the stud, he could be a hero, he could do anything. When we were shooting the scene with Alicia and him right before they kiss \u2014 which I had rewritten 500 times \u2014 the crew would say to me, \u201cOh, that\u2019s a good scene.\u201d I was like, \u201cOh, it is?\u201d The big guys carrying all the equipment around are saying they liked it because it\u2019s romantic!<\/p>\n

Donald Faison, as Dionne\u2019s boyfriend Murray, had a big first on the set.<\/strong>
<\/br>
\nAH: When we finish the freeway scene, and Murray kisses Dionne because she\u2019s all nervous, and they\u2019re happy to be alive \u2014 that was Donald\u2019s first screen kiss. When I said \u201ccut,\u201d he just jumped around the set like crazy. He was bouncing around like a puppy. God, he was happy and proud.<\/p>\n

The freeway-freakout scene was inspired by Heckerling\u2019s own phobia.<\/strong>
<\/br>
\nAH: I have issues with driving. I got my license after failing the test five times, because I was too nervous. Every so often, in LA, you\u2019ll find yourself in a lane that just turns into the freeway. When that happens, I keep screaming until I get off again.<\/p>\n

Heckerling makes a cute cameo at Miss Geist\u2019s wedding.<\/strong>
<\/br>
\nTC: I love Amy, which is why I forced her to be my bridesmaid in the movie. When I threw the bouquet, they weren\u2019t going at it enough, so Amy had to get in there and push everyone around. There\u2019s a shot of her pushing everybody.<\/p>\n

\u201cClueless\u201d will always be a go-to for teen girls.<\/strong>
<\/br>
