Mexican police found 19 bodies \u2014 many of them burned and shot \u2014 in a remote area near the US border that is known for drug smuggling violence.<\/p>\n

Authorities said the bodies were found in an uninhabited region of Tamaulipas, about 40 miles south of Rio Grande City, Texas.<\/p>\n

When responding to a tip about a burning vehicle on Friday, officials discovered the corpses inside and on the back of a burned-out pickup truck.<\/p>\n

A second charred vehicle was found on the site.<\/p>\n

\u201cPreliminary investigations point to the fact that the cause of death were shots from firearms, and that then the bodies were set on fire,\u201d a statement from prosecutors said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the lines of investigation is that the events could have happ<\/a>ened at a place other than that of the discovery.\u201d<\/p>\n

No bullet shells were found on the scene.<\/p>\n

The area is known for \u201cconstant fights between rival criminal groups that traffic drugs, arms and migrants,\u201d an anonymous source close to the investigation told Reuters.<\/p>\n
