John Boyega<\/strong> and Robert De Niro<\/strong> are headed to Netflix for\u00a0The Formula<\/em><\/strong>, a new film from director\u00a0Gerard McMurray<\/strong> (The First Purge<\/em>). The story follows a Formula One racing prodigy who ends up becoming a getaway driver, and that\u2019s the type of high-concept thriller idea we need more of these days. Just imagine all the chase scenes! If at least one car doesn\u2019t drive up some sort of ramp and flip upside down during this movie, I\u2019m going to be angry.<\/p>\n

Deadline has the scoop on\u00a0The Formula<\/em>, reporting that\u00a0John Boyega and Robert De Niro are attached to star and Gerard McMurray will write, produce, and direct the project.\u00a0Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro, and Berry Welsh will also produce. The plot follows \u201ca Formula One racing prodigy is forced to become a getaway driver to save the only family he has left.\u201d There\u2019s not much more info than that, but it\u2019s probably safe to assume Boyega is playing the Formula One driver, which means we\u2019re going to get lots of scenes of Boyega furiously spinning a steering wheel, possibly in slow-motion.
\nThis is the type of mid-budget, low-stakes action-thriller that Hollywood seems reluctant to churn out these days, so there\u2019s a lot of potential here. I\u2019m not expecting\u00a0The Formula<\/em> to be some sort of ground-breaking extravaganza. Just give me a solid, entertaining flick with some cool stunt work and I\u2019m in. I especially like the idea of Boyega leading the film \u2013 he\u2019s a damn good actor and deserves more roles.<\/p>\n

Now that it\u2019s over, Boyega has been very vocal about his disapp<\/a>ointment with the\u00a0Star Wars<\/em> sequel trilogy. He was already on the way to stardom with his memorable turn in\u00a0Attack the Block<\/em>, but it was\u00a0Star Wars<\/em> that helped make him even more famous. Unfortunately, the actor felt that the franchise really let his character down. \u201cBeing in a big franchise, it\u2019s kind of like luxury jail sometimes for an actor when you want to do something else,\u201d he said in a recent interview<\/a>. \u201cBecause remember, in a franchise you\u2019re working on one character for many years, which can starve your other muscles.\u201d<\/p>\n

Boyega recently appeared in Steve McQueen\u2019s\u00a0Small Axe<\/em> film series<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019d heard about Steve\u2019s directing style, I was really really curious and excited to have the opportunity anyway to be a part of it. And when it came through I was on the tele like \u2018this is my moment,’\u201d Boyega said.<\/p>\n

No word yet on when we might see\u00a0The Formula<\/em>, or even when it might start shooting. We\u2019ll be on the lookout for more details as they arrive.<\/p>\n
