\u200bChinese leader Xi Jinping warned\u00a0\u200bin\u200b his virtual keynote address<\/a> to world leaders at Davos on Monday against beginning a \u201cnew Cold War\u201d in remarks that app<\/a>eared\u200b to be a shot\u00a0aimed at President Biden, who has spoken of strengthening global alliances\u200b to counter Beijing\u2019s growing influence.\u200b<\/p>\n

\u201cTo build small cliques or start a new Cold War, to reject, threaten or intimidate others \u2026 will only push the world into division,\u201d Xi said during his speech Monday, the first day of the World Economic Forum. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe should build an open world economy \u2026 discard discriminatory and exclusionary standards, rules and systems, and take down barriers to trade, investment and technological exchanges,\u201d Xi said in his first address to the forum since 2017.<\/p>\n

And in reference to former President Donald Trump, who challenged China on trade\u200b, human rights and its botched response to the coronavirus,\u200b Xi\u00a0decried confrontation, saying it \u00a0\u201cwill always end up harming every nation\u2019s interests and sacrificing people\u2019s welfare.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n

Biden did not attend the forum, deciding instead to send his \u200bclimate czar John Kerry, while he pushes for his legislative agenda in the first days of his administration.\u00a0\u200b<\/p>\n

Xi called on the G-20 nations and the European Union to strengthen their bonds to serve as the \u201cmain forum for global economic governance\u201d and for closer economic cooperation between countries.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He also confirmed that China plans to cut carbon emissions by 65 percent by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2060 \u2013 even as China emits a quarter of the world\u2019s greenhouse gases.<\/p>\n

\u201cMeeting these targets will require tremendous hard work from China. But we believe that when the interests of the entire humanity are at stake, China must step forward, take action and get the job done,\u201d \u200bXi said.<\/p>\n
