Brian Geraghty is enjoying his role as creepy psycho man child Ronald Pergman on \u201cBig Sky\u201d \u2014 but says that playing the role has its awkward moments.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy girlfriend and I have been together for a good amount of time because of the pandemic and I haven\u2019t met some of her friends yet,\u201d says Geraghty, 45. \u201cTheir first impression of me is Ronald on \u2018Big Sky.\u2019 My best friend called me and said, \u2018When does \u2018Big Sky\u2019 come back? Man, you\u2019re so crazy!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s fun to get feedback like, \u2018You\u2019re so creepy\u2019 or \u2018I feel bad for you,\u2019 \u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s all of the things we\u2019re going for.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBig Sky,\u201d back Tuesday night at 10 on ABC<\/a>, made an instant impact in its COVID-delayed November premiere, killing off star Ryan Philippe (Cody Hoyt) at the end of its first episode in the fall\u2019s biggest primetime shocker.<\/p>\n

The series<\/a>, starring Kylie Bunbury and Katheryn Winnick as private detective Cassie Dewell and ex-cop Jenny Hoyt, unfolds in southwestern Montana, where young women are vanishing at an alarming rate. Ronald, a lonely trucker, and his partner-in-crime, Montana state trooper Rick Legarski (John Carroll Lynch), are part of a sex-trafficking ring based in Canada, holding the women hostage before transferring them across the border. In the fall finale, Cassie shot Legarski in the head. <\/p>\n

Ronald, who Geraghty describes as having \u201can \u2018American Pycho\u2019 fastidiousness,\u201d lives at home with his smothering mother (Valerie Mahaffey), who by turns denigrates and coddles her grown son, establishing an unsettling dynamic between them. In one creepy scene from the fall season, Ronald, who can\u2019t sleep, crawls into bed with his mother; in another, he throttles her by the throat within an inch of her life.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I got the character description I thought, \u2018This is like the Joker meets Tom Hanks in \u2018Big,’\u201d Geraghty says. \u201cHe\u2019s very repressed and has a very interesting relationship with his mother, and with his father-figure, Rick.<\/p>\n

\u201cI try to understand what would make these boundaries get blurred and I went down a few roads with that,\u201d he says. \u201cI think of Ronald as a very efficient guy who\u2019s very good at certain things that he continues to work on and prides himself on. There\u2019s something that\u2019s completely boyish and childish about him. He\u2019s not developed, emotionally, which is due to his relationship with his mother. He\u2019s a guy who\u2019s been beaten down a lot and told he\u2019s not good enough. He\u2019s playing around with right and wrong \u2014 but does he know the difference?\u201d<\/p>\n

The first five episodes of \u201cBig Sky\u201d focused on Cassie and Jenny trying to catch Cody\u2019s killer while simultaneously searching for three young victims (played by Jesse James Keitel, Natalie Alyn Lind and Jade Pettyjohn) held captive by Ronald and Rick in an underground storage container.<\/p>\n

The series is based on \u201cThe Highway,\u201d a 2013 novel by C.J. Box.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey wanted an earnest, all-American quality [for Ronald] and then we flipped that on its head,\u201d says Geraghty, whose resume includes roles on \u201cBoardwalk Empire,\u201d \u201cChicago, P.D.\u201d and \u201cThe Alienist\u201d (as Teddy Roosevelt). \u201cThis is a really complicated character and what we did is subvert him from how he is in the book, which is a bearded, gruff guy who maybe has a tattoo on his neck. A certain posture [for Ronald] started coming to me; he\u2019s closed off and hunched over because of his life. He\u2019s afraid. This is a guy who doesn\u2019t speak unless he needs to speak. He\u2019s not a grandstander.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith Ronald and Rick you get that kind of ambiguity that makes it fun,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s great when you can give some empathy to villains, in a way, and hate them because they\u2019re so bad \u2014 but when you give them some redeeming qualities, the audience has different emotional connections.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
