Wink, the smart home hub company, is down<\/a>. That includes cloud controls, voice assistant controls, and even Wink\u2019s website<\/a> and email support.\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s a pretty bad look for a company that\u00a0<\/span>mandated monthly fees<\/span>\u00a0just six months ago on the promise of stability. Maybe this time it will die for good, which would be better for everyone involved.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Wink smart home company suffers from a pretty rocky history. The company has been through multiple buyouts, including its latest to Will.i.am\u2019s company dubbed iam+. At one point, you couldn\u2019t find a Wink hub in stores or online, and thus we\u00a0<\/span>stopped recommending the hub as an option altogether<\/span><\/a>. It reversed course on its promise never to charge a subscript<\/a>ion, and mandated a monthly subscription for all users\u2014<\/span>with one week\u2019s notice<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wink\u00a0<\/span>changed its mind<\/span>\u00a0and held off on the subscription, then\u00a0<\/span>changed its mind again<\/span>\u00a0and instituted subscriptions. The entire point was, of course, to keep the lights on and fund new development. Before that, Wink didn\u2019t add support for new integrations for well over a year.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"ANow, the\u00a0<\/span>entire service is down<\/span><\/a>. For users lucky enough to be logged in, some local controls still work. But Wink\u2019s local control options are pretty limited, and if you get logged out, you won\u2019t be able to log back in. Cloud controls, voice controls, third-party integrations (like Nest and Arlo), and even the website and email support failed. Very little works.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wink\u2019s site currently redirects to the Wink Status page. There, you\u2019ll see messages that started yesterday morning with occasional updates. But those updates aren\u2019t promising and amount to \u201cstill investigating.\u201d It doesn\u2019t sound like Wink has any timeline for solving the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time Wink\u2019s services have failed, and in the past, it turned out to be a security certificate that didn\u2019t get renewed. But that\u2019s an easy solution, pay for a new certificate. But honestly, we still recommend considering alternative solutions to Wink, of which there are plenty. <\/span><\/p>\n

If you prefer a traditional smart home hub, you may want to check out Hubitat<\/a> or Home Assistant<\/a>. Otherwise, you may find that Google Assistant and Alexa speaker work well enough as smart home hubs in many homes now. But an unstable smart home platform makes for a terrible smart home experience. You\u2019re betting off making the jump to another company with a better track history, which is all of them.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n
