\n The head of video game<\/a>s giant Valve\u00a0says future brain-computer interfaces could change how players feel.<\/p>\n

Gabe Newell believes\u00a0BCIs will soon create superior experiences to what we can perceive through our eyes and ears alone.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut that\u2019s not where it gets weird,\u201d he told<\/a> New Zealand\u2019s 1 News<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cWhere it gets weird is when who you are becomes editable through a BCI.\u201d<\/p>\n

Newell envisions the devices detecting a gamer\u2019s emotions\u00a0and then adjusting the settings to modify their mood \u2014 like ramping up the difficulty when they\u2019re getting bored.<\/p>\n

But they could also be app<\/a>lied to everyday aspects of our lives, from turning up our focus to altering our sleep patterns through an app.<\/p>\n

Valve is currently developing its own BCIs. The company behind Half-Life<\/em> and Counter-Strike<\/em> is working on \u201cmodified VR head straps\u201d that developers can use to experiment with signals from the brain.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re a software developer in 2022 who doesn\u2019t have one of these in your test lab, you\u2019re making a silly mistake,\u201d said Newell.<\/p>\n

\nHe nonetheless acknowledges that BCIs are fraught with risks:<\/p>\n

Nobody wants to say, remember Bob? Remember when Bob got hacked by the Russian malware? Yeah that sucked. Is he still running naked through the forests.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

I don\u2019t wanna end up like Bob, but the focus enhancer sounds particularly appealing during the inspiration vacuum of pandemic life.<\/p>\n
