What exactly is the hold-up?<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                            Vaxx Populi: No new Pfizer doses are arriving in Canada this week, and fewer than a third of those originally allotted for next week are expected. Why the delay?\n                        <\/div>\n<div>\n                                                                        <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier in January, Pfizer revealed that it would be slashing the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses it delivers to Canada<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/what-you-need-to-know-about-vaccine-rollout-1.5882033\">by around 50 per cent over four weeks<\/a>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, Pfizer shipped around 20,000 fewer doses than the expected 208,650 in the week of Jan. 18. No doses will arrive this week and just 79,000 of the expected weekly allotment of 208,650<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are expected in the first week of February.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none;\" title=\"COVID_Vaccine_distribution_TABLE\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/_\/YOkx7UjXcoPe2c2LPDWO?src=embed\" width=\"744\" height=\"468\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Why the sudden shortage?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer lies in a small town in Belgium called Puurs, where Pfizer has a large facility that is capable of producing more than 400 million doses of vaccines and other medicines every year, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/belgium-town-puurs-spotlight-coronavirus-vaccine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Politico<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is the Pfizer plant from which Canada receives its COVID-19 vaccine doses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0I\u2019m immunocompromised. Can I get the COVID-19 vaccine?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To meet worldwide demand for the vaccine, the company needs to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/investors.biontech.de\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/statement-european-upscaling-well-impact-deliveries\">expand the Puurs facility<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It always intended to expand the site this year, but moved the date forward so that it could produce more doses earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccine production is a heavily regulated process with exacting quality controls which rely on complex chains of suppliers and often have relatively stable yearly orders. The Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaccines are the first <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roved vaccines that use mRNA <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>, which necessitates new manufacturing and delivery processes (for example, the Pfizer vaccine needs to be stored and transported in special ultra-cold freezers). <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2021\/01\/24\/world\/covid-19-coronavirus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reconfiguration and expansion of the Puurs plant necessitates temporarily taking vaccine production lines offline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And that unavoidable shutdown affected deliveries to Canada and other countries, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-55771223\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including Belgium itself<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though Pfizer said it <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/what-you-need-to-know-about-vaccine-rollout-1.5882033\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cwill be back to the original schedule of deliveries to the European Union beginning the week of Jan. 25.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (While shipments can be quickly delivered to nations in Europe, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.freightwaves.com\/news\/first-covid-19-vaccine-shipment-lands-in-canada\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">those destined for Canada go via the hub-and-spoke shipping system of Pfizer\u2019s logistics partner,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> UPS, which includes stops in Germany and Kentucky.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0How will I know (and where do I go) when it\u2019s my turn to get the COVID vaccine?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccine delivery delays were inevitable, experts say. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEveryone\u2019s assuming it will all go perfectly, and it\u2019s not going to,\u201d <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cen.acs.org\/business\/outsourcing\/Pfizer-Moderna-ready-vaccine-manufacturing\/98\/i46\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said Peter Bigelow, president of xCell Strategy Consulting to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chemical &amp; Engineering News<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> back in November, though he predicted Moderna might be on more of a learning curve. \u201cAs for Pfizer, they have such a machine for managing CDMOs, [<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.financialcontent.com\/stocks\/news\/read\/40871777\/pharmaceutical_contract_development_and_manufacturing_organization_\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contract development and manufacturing organizations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the name used in the pharmaceutical industry for outsourcing businesses] and I know there are a lot of people really focused on it, and they\u2019ll probably stay on top of things.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, on Jan. 22, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-eu-astrazeneca-idUSKBN29U0Y9?taid=600ed8575a2f6200019315a2&amp;utm_campaign=trueAnthem:+Trending+Content&amp;utm_medium=trueAnthem&amp;utm_source=twitter\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AstraZeneca, <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whose COVID-19 vaccine has received <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/health\/coronavirus\/mexico-approves-astrazeneca-oxford-coronavirus-vaccine-1.5253705\">emergency-use authorization<\/a> in a half-dozen countries, including the U.K., India and Mexico<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, announced that it was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-eu-astrazeneca-idUSKBN29U0Y9?taid=600ed8575a2f6200019315a2&amp;utm_campaign=trueAnthem:+Trending+Content&amp;utm_medium=trueAnthem&amp;utm_source=twitter\">cutting its deliveries<\/a> to the European Union<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by about 60 per cent to 31 million doses by the end of March, amid reports that it has encountered supply problems. (The European Union is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amp.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/jan\/25\/eu-threatens-to-block-covid-vaccine-exports-amid-astrazeneca-shortfall?__twitter_impression=true\">frustrated<\/a> at both the sudden announcement and AstraZeneca\u2019s explanations, especially as it had helped finance the vaccine\u2019s development. Europe\u2019s health commissioner, Stella Kyriakides, proposed that drugmakers <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-eu-astrazeneca\/eu-urges-astrazeneca-to-speed-up-vaccine-deliveries-amid-supply-shock-idUSKBN29U0Y9\">register in advance their vaccine exports<\/a> from European plants so the EU can track their shipments, including those destined for Canada from Pfizer, though she stopped short of threatening to halt vaccine exports.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the issues facing all governments is that the number of approved vaccines is still limited. In Canada, just the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are approved for use, while two others\u2014<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/drugs-health-products\/covid19-industry\/drugs-vaccines-treatments\/authorization\/applications.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by AstraZeneca\/Oxford University and Janssen\/Johnson &amp; Johnson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014are under review by Health Canada. Once the number of vaccines increases, the impact of any delays should lessen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0COVID-19 in Canada: How our battle against the second wave is going<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governments, including Ottawa, have been told that the current Pfizer reduction is temporary and that, because of the expansion at Puurs, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/investors.biontech.de\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/statement-european-upscaling-well-impact-deliveries\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it will be able to catch up quickly and<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to deliver the fully committed quantity of vaccine doses in the first quarter and significantly more in the second quarter.\u201d <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-01-11\/pfizer-biontech-boost-covid-vaccine-target-to-2-billion-doses\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pfizer and BioNTech have boosted their COVID-19 vaccine output goa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l for 2021 from 1.3 billion doses to two billion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/trudeau-pfizer-deliveries-1.5883941\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Pfizer has<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cassured me that hundreds of thousands of Pfizer doses will be delivered the week of February 15 and in the weeks to follow.\u201d And the Canadian government has reiterated that it expects to meet its target of distributing four million doses of the Pfizer vaccine by the end of March.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There may also be hope for more Pfizer vaccine doses from a locale closer to home. Right now, the U.S. government has an agreement with Pfizer that the first 100 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine produced in its American facilities belong to the U.S. government for its own distribution. On Jan. 22, in their first conversation since the inauguration, Justin Trudeau and U.S. President Joe Biden \u201cdiscussed the prospects of Canada being supplied with the COVID-19 vaccine\u201d from Pfizer\u2019s plant in Kalamazoo, Mich., <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/joe-biden-north-america-mexico-justin-trudeau-coronavirus-pandemic-80c660fce879b755cbcf2e22f61ac5b2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>As Canada rolls out the country\u2019s most complex vaccination project to date,\u00a0<\/em>Maclean\u2019s<em>\u00a0presents\u00a0<\/em>Vaxx Populi<em>, an ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> in which Patricia Treble tackles the most pressing questions related to the new COVID-19 vaccines.
