The man whose mendacity unleashed a deadly pandemic on the world has a complaint to make: The West, in pushing back on Xi Jinping\u2019s aggression, risks starting \u201ca new cold war.\u201d<\/p>\n

And the Chinese president had the nerve to deliver the warning after a weekend of Communist military bellicosity targeting tiny Taiwan.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo build small cliques or start a new cold war, to reject, threaten or intimidate others, to willfully impose decoupling, supply disruption or sanctions, to create isolation or estrangement will only push the world into division and even confrontation,\u201d Xi said in his keynote address to the World Economic Forum.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s forum is virtual, not the usual gathering in Switzerland\u2019s Davos resort, thanks to the pandemic China\u2019s government made more deadly through a coverup it continues to this day. When Australia called for an international investigation of the pandemic\u2019s origins, an angry Beijing slapp<\/a>ed restrictions and tariffs on Aussie imports and continues its own \u201ccold war\u201d against Canberra on multiple fronts.<\/p>\n

Yet Xi\u2019s speech still insisted any confrontation, whether a \u201ccold war, hot war, trade war or tech war\u201d would \u201cend up harming every nation\u2019s interests and sacrificing people\u2019s welfare.\u201d<\/p>\n

Laughable, when Beijing sent eight bombers and four fighter jets into Taiwan\u2019s airspace Saturday and another 15 aircraft Sunday. The regime is relentlessly upping its assets in the South China Sea \u2014 a message not just to Taiwan, which it considers its property, but to the several nations that dispute China\u2019s claim of sovereignty over much of the area.<\/p>\n

Washington responded quickly Saturday, sending a strike group led by the USS Theodore Roosevelt into the South China Sea. \u201cWith two-thirds of the world\u2019s trade travel<\/a>ling through this very important region, it is vital that we maintain our presence and continue to promote the rules-based order which has allowed us all to prosper,\u201d task force commander Rear Adm. Doug Verissimo stated. The State Department called it a move to protect \u201cfreedom of the seas\u201d and the \u201crock-solid\u201d US commitment to Taiwan.<\/p>\n

Xi\u2019s \u201csmall cliques\u201d jab may refer to President Biden\u2019s plans to build an alliance to hold China to account. Tony Blinken, Biden\u2019s just-confirmed secretary of state, told the Senate last week, \u201cPresident Trump was right in taking a tougher approach to China.\u201d <\/p>\n

Let\u2019s hope the new administration continues to stand up to China\u2019s dangerous bluster.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
