“#Flaming Lips host COVID-safe ‘Space Bubble’ concert<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Bubbled-up audiences are the spacey hack for live performances in the time of COVID-19. <\/p>\n

Innovative indie act the Flaming Lips performed two shows in Oklahoma this month, protecting their fans and themselves from one another by placing everyone inside their own inflatable bubble so as to make the concert \u201csafer than going to the grocery store,\u201d said frontman Wayne Coyne.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe collect everybody and then we take them row by row to their bubbles,\u201d Coyne, a long-time bubble enthusiast<\/a>, told Rolling Stone<\/a> last month of the strategy. \u201cOnce you\u2019re in the bubble you can do whatever the f\u2013k you want, and that\u2019s the beauty of it. That\u2019s what we spent most of the time figuring out. The music part of it, we got that s\u2013t down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Each bubble holds up to three people, and each show can accommodate up to 100 bubbles, the BBC<\/a> reported of the \u201cspace bubble\u201d configuration at Oklahoma City venue Criterion.<\/p>\n

The method app<\/a>ears to not only work, but hardly take away from the euphoria of live music: Video of the performance shows an enthused audience dancing as confetti reigns down, the bubbles making them safer but no slower to react to the show.<\/p>\n

The band employed confetti and a dazzling light show to accompany the COVID-safe bubbles, which allowed concertgoers to dance and sing along without fear of trading droplets.<\/figcaption>

\u201cThey did it!!\u201d Coyne\u2019s wife, Katy Coyne, captioned<\/a> an Instagram video of one of the shows. \u201cThe Flaming Lips successfully pulled off their first Space Bubble concert last night!\u201d<\/p>\n

The Flaming Lips have been working on the bubbled audience concept for months, and used the plastic balls back in October as well. \u201cIt seems absurd, but .\u2009.\u2009. it\u2019s becoming kind of serious and real,\u201d Coyne told music blog BrooklynVegan ahead of the show. \u201cWe\u2019re starting to get ready to do an actual show where .\u2009.\u2009. there\u2019s three people in each of these space bubbles, and we play .\u2009.\u2009. two shows a night, and getting a big audience in there each time.\u201d<\/p>\n
