\n Democrats this week proved they don\u2019t want law enforcement reform \u2014 they just want to run on the issue this fall instead. That\u2019s the clear bottom line of the Senate minority\u2019s refusal to allow a vote, or even debate, on the GOP bill, shepherded by Sen. Tim Scott.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur bill does something. Theirs does nothing,\u201d House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sniffed. False: In fact, many provisions in Scott\u2019s bill are the same as ones in the Democrats\u2019 House bill.<\/p>\n

No, the Republican bill wouldn\u2019t end \u201cqualified immunity,\u201d which can protect cops from being personally held liable for damages for violating someone\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n

Scott said the issue is a \u201cnonstarter\u201d for his party \u2014 but the GOP might\u2019ve come around in negotiations with the House, if Democrats hadn\u2019t stopped the Senate bill.<\/p>\n

The Republican bill instructed the attorney general<\/a> to prohibit federal officers from using chokeholds and encouraged states to ban them (and rein in no-knock warrants) by putting federal funds on the line. It required departments to report all officer-involved deaths to the FBI and, like the Dems\u2019 bill, would have made lynching a federal crime.<\/p>\n

The House bill does go further, but not much. And Scott, a black man who\u2019s experienced police misconduct himself, was so passionate about getting reform passed that he told Democrats he\u2019d allow them to offer ample amendments during debate. \u201cThey said no. They had no desire to actually solve this issue before the election,\u201d the senator told Fox News<\/a>. (House Democrats, meanwhile, rammed their bill through without allowing a single Republican amendment.)<\/p>\n

Pelosi is being utterly shameless, charging that Republicans are \u201ctrying to get away with murder, actually \u2014 the murder of George Floyd.\u201d Asked if she wanted to soften that statement, she instead doubled down.<\/p>\n

In reality, it\u2019s the Democratic refusal to allow Senate debate that has ended any chance of policing reform passing Congress this year.<\/p>\n

By Pelosi\u2019s logic, that means that her party is the one trying to get away with murder.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
