The symbolic Doomsday Clock\u00a0\u2014 designed by scientists\u00a0to measure how close humanity is to an apocalypse \u2014 remains set dangerously close to disaster at 100 seconds until \u201cmidnight,\u201d it was revealed Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The annual end-of-days prediction\u00a0remains the closest the clock has ever ticked toward catastrophe, based on threats including the coronavirus, climate change and nuclear catastrophe, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists announced<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Marking \u201ca historic wakeup call,\u201d its hands have remained in the same place since January 2020, the first time it ever moved closer than two minutes to midnight.<\/p>\n

\u201c[This year] revealed just how unprepared and unwilling countries and the international system are to handle global emergencies properly,\u201d the group said in a press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are now expressing how close the world is to catastrophe in seconds \u2013 not hours, or even minutes. It is the closest to Doomsday we have ever been in the history of the Doomsday Clock. We now face a true emergency \u2013 an absolutely unacceptable state of world affairs that has eliminated any margin for error or further delay,\u201d added Rachel Bronson, president and CEO of the group.<\/p>\n

In a virtual press conference, members of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists said nuclear\u00a0 calamity is still the number one biggest threat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most important thing is to make sure every one of your political reps know that nuclear weapons are a danger now,\u201d the spokesman said.<\/p>\n

Doomsday Clock launched during the Cold War in 1947, when the clock\u2019s hands were set at seven minutes to midnight.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The dramatic visual metaphor has now moved closer to the end of times in three of the last four years.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
