During the darkest moments of lockdown, people went wild shopping online, stocking up on gear for a random hobby or hunting down expensive ingredients to master a special meal at home \u2014 anything to spark joy. <\/p>\n

But now, with vaccines on the horizon and brighter days ahead, those same eager purchasers are seeing their stockpiles in a new light. Mountains of pantry staples went unused; pricey exercise equipment feels like another thing taking up much-needed space. <\/p>\n

For Josephine Zohny, the barrage of depressing news<\/a> last April led her to splurge on a $320 liquor order from Drizly. The problem? She rarely drinks. <\/p>\n

\u201cI was reading the news and suddenly became overwhelmed with the urge to buy alcohol,\u201d said the 36-year-old publicist from Ridgewood, Queens. Months later, she\u2019s reassessing her barely touched stash of about 10 kinds of booze, including\u00a0\u201ca pink gin \u2014 only because it was pink \u2014 and\u00a0some kind of artisanal-hipster rum.\u201d <\/p>\n

She said she still can\u2019t quite understand why she felt like she needed it. \u201cIt was all anxiety \u2014 I don\u2019t know what came over me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tatiana Hernandez scrolls through Instagram at night, when her defenses are down, and orders \u201cpretty things.\u201d Her most egregious COVID-era purchase was the \u201cOklahoma!\u201d soundtrack on vinyl, which she scored from an account that sells vintage wares. Unfortunately, said the 26-year-old, \u201cI don\u2019t have a record player, so it sort of lives in my dresser.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Other unused deliveries include a makeup brush cleaner \u2014 \u201cI didn\u2019t need it\u201d \u2014 and a pair of sky blue Gucci slides. Even though they were on sale for $260 over Black Friday, \u201cI wore them once. They were kind of unnecessary.\u201d Recently, she bought a $240 Mason Pearson hairbrush<\/a>, endorsed by a favorite influencer \u2014 even though she doesn\u2019t use a brush on her curly hair. <\/p>\n

The web developer living in Salt Lake City admitted that shopping gives her a sense of accomplishment \u2014 especially while stuck in the house during the pandemic. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels so satisfying when I\u2019m able to find a deal on something I\u2019ve been eyeing,\u201d said Hernandez.<\/p>\n

That instant satisfaction is what Rosana Smith was looking for when she made a decision to get bangs in November.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to do something spontaneous,\u201d said the 25-year-old clinical research coordinator. <\/p>\n

Her makeover made its straight-from-the-salon debut on Instagram \u2014 and the regrets kicked in almost immedia<\/a>tely afterward, when the style turned \u201cnoodle-y\u201d in the humid Miami heat. What\u2019s more, the \u201cnightmare\u201d look required a daily blow-dry, which was too much upkeep for the \u201cwash and go\u201d gal.<\/p>\n

Also unexpectedly high-maintenance? <\/p>\n

New Jersey mom Caren Begun\u2019s 13-foot above-ground pool. Like many, she sprang for the pool after COVID halted summer plans.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt ended up being a huge headache,\u201d said Begun, 49, who lives in Cherry Hill. \u201cOur ground wasn\u2019t completely flat,\u201d she said, adding that the tilt let algae and bacteria proliferate. <\/p>\n

After buying it for $400 in May, she said her family barely used it, and she sold it for $50 \u201cjust to get it out of [my] sight.\u201d <\/p>\n

Now, they\u2019re waiting for the grass to grow in in the spot where it sat in the backyard. But the worst part, Begun said, is that, \u201cmy husband has a reason to say \u2018I told you so,\u2019\u201d because he never wanted it in the first place. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was definitely a frivolous, not-thought-out purchase,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

Elizabeth Chan had big dreams for her tortilla press, which she bought for $50 at the beginning of the pandemic when she found a \u201cdearth\u201d of tortillas in the supermarket with \u201cno Mexican restaurants open.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had nothing else to do \u2014 we were going to make tortillas, just like in the restaurant. So I bought a bag of masa and a tortilla press,\u201d said Chan, a recording artist and mom of two in the Financial District. <\/p>\n

Instead, \u201cIt\u2019s been around and annoying us for the whole year. I will be celebrating the tortilla press\u2019 1-year-old birthday soon and haven\u2019t yet taken it out of the box.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
