Like the Michael Jordan\/LeBron James GOAT argument, these two prolific artists have fueled the same debate for years. Van was a close friend and associate of the late great \u201cPurple Rain\u201d singer, so I had to ask him who comes out on top of that competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love Michael Jackson. [But to Prince] no comparison,\u201d he told me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Prince can be his own band. When he can play the drums better than his own drummer and his drummer is the best in the world. When he plays better than his own guitarist and he had the best guitarist in the world \u2026 Listen, as a vocalist, maybe Michael gets him. Maybe even as a dancer. But then you are out of moves because as a songwriter, as a drummer, as a guitarist \u2026 There\u2019s not even a competition.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>But more importantly, could Prince hoop as the Old Charlie Murphy\/Dave Ch<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>elle legend goes? <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrince can hoop. By the time we were really really kicking it, though, his hip problems started to get to him. His favorite thing was table tennis, ping pong. He would have you diving across the room, and he wouldn\u2019t even move,\u201d said Jones, adding that underneath Prince\u2019s skintight, flamboyant clothing lived a true philanthropist who was quietly donating money to Black Lives Matter, the Harlem Children\u2019s Zone and Yes We Code.<\/p>\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"wpcom-iframe-a00569aacf841807e96457c31d9111d7\" width=\"640\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/embeds.nypost.com\/protected-iframe\/a00569aacf841807e96457c31d9111d7\" scrolling=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" class=\"\"><br \/>\n    <\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe really cared about our issues. He cared about our community, cared about poor kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No wonder they got along. Jones has made a career of caring for a demographic that hasn\u2019t always had allies: prisoners. And that\u2019s why I was happy to get him on \u201cRenaissance Man\u201d during this year of seemingly unprecedented political engagement. Alongside Jay-Z, Robert Kraft and Meek Mill, Jones is a partner in the Reform Alliance, which aims to change probation and parole laws and reduce the number of people in  the criminal justice system. He is a contributor to CNN and hosted the network\u2019s eight-part <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> \u201cThe Redemption Project with Van Jones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones joked that people think he arrived on CNN fully formed, but he has a wonderful origin story. His father went into the military to get himself out of poverty, put himself through Lane College in Tennessee, where he married the college president\u2019s daughter, Jones\u2019 mother. And one generation later, Jones graduated from Yale Law School at 24.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been working on criminal justice issues, that kind of stuff, police reform, juvenile justice for almost 30 years. And as a result, you know, I know my soul is rested, man. You could have run the credits on my family\u2019s story when I walked off that stage at Yale Law School. I\u2019m ninth-generation American. I\u2019m the first one of my family that was born with all my rights recognized by this government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a political independent myself, I admire Jones\u2019 willingness to swim in wide open waters. While he does have to work within the political framework, he doesn\u2019t subscribe to only one party to accomplish his mission. And what he has to say, might shock people who treat their political parties as cults. As he noted, in the early 2000s, he fought to close youth prisons in California, which is run by Democrats. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBipartisanship in California is Democrats plus the Green Party,\u201d he noted. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes you work with Democrats, sometimes against. Sometimes you work with Republicans, sometimes against \u2026 But you work for the least of these, the people who don\u2019t have a political party because they\u2019re not even allowed to vote. They\u2019re locked up in prisons. That\u2019s my constituency. And I will work with or against anybody to support that, to support their quest for freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having that mentality means you are taking heat from both sides, but he considers the source when he\u2019s getting flak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhenever I get criticized on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> or whatever, I would say to myself, \u2018Whoever this is criticizing me on Twitter, I know one thing about them. They are not in federal prison, so that\u2019s not my constituency, so I can sleep well.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n<p>Now, he isn\u2019t that brave. He totally copped out when I asked him his favorite Jay-Z album. \u201cYou can\u2019t make me pick,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of our conversation, he dropped some grandma level of wisdom. I wanted to know which podcasts he listens to, and he said podcasts featuring people with whom he disagrees, like Newt Gingrich\u2019s \u201cNewt\u2019s World.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour greatest strength doesn\u2019t come from inside your own circle. That\u2019s your greatest comfort,\u201d he said, adding that growth comes from uncomfortable spaces.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a sentiment so worthy, I might have to cross-stitch that on a pillow.<\/p>\n<p><em>Detroit native Jalen Rose is a member of the University of Michigan\u2019s iconoclastic Fab Five, who shook up the college hoops world in the early \u201990s. He played 13 seasons in the NBA, before transitioning into a media personality.
