The hit show \u201cBridgerton\u201d is officially the most-watched Netflix original series in the company\u2019s history. <\/p>\n

The show, based on a book of the same name by Julia Quinn, surpassed even the streaming service\u2019s own rosy projections in its first season by earning 82 million views, Deadline reported Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bridgerton <\/em>portrays upper-class life in Regency England, giving a subversive take on the period with color-blind casting and a storyline that heavily focuses on the lives of women.<\/p>\n

The series was released Dec. 25 on Netflix and was described by GQ Magazine as a combination of \u201cGossip Girl\u201d and \u201cDownton Abbey.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the show really provides an incredible escape for audiences at a time where that\u2019s exactly what\u2019s needed,\u201d director Chris Van Dusen said. <\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Bridgerton\u2019\u00a0is this lavish, vibrant, steamy Regency love story; it is about romance, love and joy; I think all of those things are really universal theme<\/a>s people are responding to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Netflix tweeted out<\/a> a message of appreciation to the show\u2019s fans on Wednesday, thanking them for making \u201cBridgerton\u201d a hit. <\/p>\n

Reg\u00e9-Jean Page, who plays The Duke of Hastings, also posted a photo with the entire cast and crew thanking fans for their love and support. <\/p>\n

Last week Netflix announced Bridgerton will return for a second season, and will focus on the elder Bridgerton child, Anthony, portrayed by Jonathan Bailey. <\/p>\n

It remains unclear how many of the show\u2019s season one cast will be returning.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
