That would be Sir Winston Churchill.<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s bath-loving \u201cBulldog\u201d of a prime minister died in 1965, but his love of Brown Windsor soap recently set off a market bubble for the sudsy stuff.<\/p>\n<p>At first, purveyors were mystified as to why the Victorian-era variety also favored by Napoleon was flying off the shelves.<\/p>\n<p>Last spring, Melissa Gibbs, owner of St. Louis-based natural soap shop Herbaria, noticed  a curious rash of people buying Queen Victoria\u2019s favorite bar. It reads: \u201cWine glasses and tumblers (the whiskey had to go somewhere), grapefruit glasses \u2026 knives, jugs, breakfast cups and saucers \u2026 36 bottles of furniture polish \u2026\u00a0and 78 pounds of Brown Windsor soap, a favorite of both Napoleon and Queen Victoria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If his steady leadership could guide Great Britain through the blitz, why not pandemic-weary readers through a schvitz? After all, Churchill loved bathing so much, he famously took meetings from the tub. <\/p>\n<p>The book\u2019s name drop convinced 63-year-old Atlanta-based airline pilot Lee Rucker to buy four bars from Herbaria. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was in the middle of reading the book and saw the reference, so I Googled the soap,\u201d Rucker told The Post. \u201cI liked the story of Churchill and Napoleon using it. I admire those qualities, and it\u2019s almost like [Larson] was saying, \u2018This is something he liked,\u2019 and I wanted to try it. Plus, he liked to bathe, so I figured he knew something about soap,\u201d she told me.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" alt=\"Winston Churchill died in 1965. It\u2019s a strong-smelling combination said to be tough on germs. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s made of aromatic essential oils because back [in the 1800s] people bathed less. They needed a headier scent, which of course isn\u2019t a selling point today,\u201d said Rhile. O\u2019Shaughnessy adds clay to her version, which she said produces a lather ideal for shaving. <\/p>\n<p>At Rucker\u2019s suggestion, Gibbs sent Larson a batch to thank him for her new customers, which skew male. The author was shocked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was truly tickled to get that letter and soap from the company and to learn of the association with my book,\u201d Larson told The Post. \u201cThis is the first time anything in my career has caused a bump in consumer product sales.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He added that he cannot be sure if it was Churchill or someone else in his household who used the soap.  <\/p>\n<p>But it has reinforced the writer\u2019s love of \u201cminutiae.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Larson found the detail in the UK\u2019s National Archives in a document from the Ministry of Works. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me, this stuff is really important,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat I was after in this book was trying to get a fine-grained texture of \u2026 what life was like during this period on a day-to-day basis. How did they get by? And these types of details really light the reader\u2019s imagination.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>And it also moisturizes their skin.<\/p>\n<p>Rucker \u2014 who used Dove bar soap for years \u2014 is placing his next order for four more bars. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy skin gets really dry in the winter, and I\u2019m finding it\u2019s not drying as much,\u201d he said. \u201cThe smell is distinctive, but the soap itself I really like.\u201d\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
