Residents of \u201cthe Hoe\u201d in Plymouth, UK, are tired of being censored on social media \u2014 and ensure they are definitely not<\/em> denigrating sex workers in their posts. <\/p>\n

Also dubbed Plymouth Hoe, the coastal landmark in the South of England has endured a high rate of sanctions per Facebook Community Standards, and it\u2019s getting slapp<\/a>ed with flagged posts over the word \u201choe.\u201d <\/p>\n

Now, Facebook is apologizing for conflating references to the picturesque seafaring city in Devon for the misogynistic slur, and carelessly taking their comments out of context, the Guardian reported<\/a> on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

A moderator of the Plymouth Facebook group reportedly brought up the issue to its members recently. \u201cJust a quick post to say anyone living Plymouth h o e, please don\u2019t write it as one word,\u201d they wrote. \u201cFacebook are saying it\u2019s harassment and muting people and giving them a Facebook ban. It\u2019s not us doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n

A follower commented in agreement, and suggested a workaround: \u201cNow I am writing Oe.\u201d <\/p>\n

Another said they\u2019d tried typing \u201cH O E,\u201d including the capital letters and a space in-between \u2014 to no avail. \u201cI got told off for bad language and could not comment for two days,\u201d they claimed. <\/p>\n

Yet one more shared that she\u2019d received the automatic warning by Facebook: \u201cAre you sure you want to post this, it may be deemed offensive to some?\u201d<\/p>\n

A section of the Visit Plymouth website describes<\/a> the Hoe as boasting a \u201cbreathtaking panorama\u201d and \u201cunbeatable views\u201d of Plymouth South, an inlet of the English Channel. <\/p>\n

In a statement directed at their Plymouth-based users, a Facebook spokesperson said, \u201cThese posts were removed in error and we apologize to those who were affected. We\u2019re looking into what happened and will take steps to rectify the error.\u201d<\/p>\n

In terms of moderating hate speech, Facebook Community Standards are meant to protect users from \u201cviolent or dehumanizing speech, harmful stereotypes, statements of inferiority, or calls for exclusion or segregation,\u201d according to<\/a> their website.<\/p>\n

In a 2017 blog post<\/a>, Richard Allan, Facebook\u2019s vice president of public policy for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, noted that understanding the context of flagged content has always been a challenge.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had trouble enforcing this policy correctly recently, mainly due to the challenges of understanding the context,\u201d he wrote of a separate circumstance involving the word \u201ckalar,\u201d which can be offensive toward Muslims, depending on the speaker. <\/p>\n

\u201cAfter further examination, we\u2019ve been able to get it right. But we expect this to be a long-term challenge,\u201d Allan concluded.<\/p>\n

Before its colloquial use in the United States as slang for a prostitute, the homonym \u201choe\u201d or \u201cho\u201d once also denoted sloping ridge landscape, crooked like the arch of a foot, according to Anglo-Saxon linguists. <\/p>\n

Most know the word also refers to a gardening tool use for breaking up soil, although The Post is unaware of any gardening enthusiasts being flagged for discussing their sturdy hoes.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
