“#HBO Hires The Nevers Showrunner to Replace Joss Whedon \u2013 \/Film<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Joss Whedon<\/strong> (The Avengers<\/em>, Buffy the Vampire Slayer<\/em>) was poised to make his big return to television with The Nevers<\/strong><\/em>, a fantasy series<\/a> he created for HBO that is set to premiere later this year. But Whedon walked away from the series in late 2020, and since the show must go on, HBO has hired his replacement.<\/p>\n

British writer Philippa Goslett<\/strong> has been tapp<\/a>ed to oversee the series, and you can learn more about both her and the show below.<\/span><\/p>\n

Deadline brings word that Goslett has taken over showrunning duties for The Nevers<\/em>, which has been described as \u201can epic science<\/a> fiction drama about a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies and a mission that might change the world.\u201d Goslett\u2019s previous credits include writing Mary Magdalene<\/em>, the recent Rooney Mara\/Joaquin Phoenix film; How to Talk to Girls at Parties<\/em>, a romance about an alien who travel<\/a>s to London; and Little Ashes<\/em>, a film about the lives of\u00a0artist Salvador Dal\u00ed, filmmaker Luis Bu\u00f1uel, and writer Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca in which Robert Pattinson played Dal\u00ed.
\nThe Nevers<\/em> was given a straight-to-series order way back in 2018, and was going to be the first time Whedon had been the showrunner of a television series in over a decade. But in November, Whedon walked away from the show, essentially saying that he didn\u2019t think he was capable of producing such a huge show with the level of quality that it deserves. \u201cI am genuinely exhausted, and am stepping back to martial my energy towards my own life, which is also at the brink of exciting change,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cI am deeply proud of the work we have done; I\u2019m grateful to all my extraordinary cast and collaborators, and to HBO for the opportunity to shape yet another strange world.\u00a0The Nevers<\/em>\u00a0is a true labor of love, but after two plus years of labor, love is about all I have to offer. It will never fade.\u201d<\/p>\n

For what it\u2019s worth, actor Ray Fisher interpreted Whedon\u2019s abrupt exit from this series as being a direct result of WarnerMedia<\/a>\u2019s internal investigation into Fisher\u2019s claims that Whedon engaged in abusive behavior on the set of Justice League<\/em>, which Whedon stepped in to finish in Zack Snyder\u2019s absence. But that\u2019s nothing more than a theory \u2013 and one that\u2019s unlikely to ever be proven.<\/p>\n

The Nevers<\/em> was co-written by Whedon and his fellow Buffy<\/em> writers Jane Espenson and Doug Petrie. It stars\u00a0Laura Donnelly <\/strong>(Outlander<\/em>,\u00a0Olivia Williams<\/strong>\u00a0(The Ghost Writer<\/em>),\u00a0James Norton<\/strong>\u00a0(Happy Valley)<\/em>,\u00a0Tom Riley<\/strong>\u00a0(Da Vinci\u2019s Demons<\/em>),\u00a0Ann Skelly<\/strong>\u00a0(Vikings<\/em>),\u00a0Ben Chaplin<\/strong>\u00a0(The Letter for the King),<\/em>\u00a0Pip Torrens<\/strong>\u00a0(The Crown)<\/em>,\u00a0Zackary Momoh<\/strong>\u00a0(Harriet),<\/em>\u00a0Amy Manson<\/strong>\u00a0(Once Upon a Time<\/em>),\u00a0Nick Frost<\/strong>\u00a0(Shaun of the<\/em> Dead<\/em>), Rochelle Neil<\/strong>\u00a0(Death in Paradise),<\/em>\u00a0Eleanor Tomlinson<\/strong> (Poldark<\/em>), and Denis O\u2019Hare<\/strong> (This is Us<\/em>).<\/p>\n
