Ethan Hawke<\/strong> is reuniting with his\u00a0Sinister<\/em> director Scott Derrickson<\/strong> for the upcoming Blumhouse horror movie\u00a0The Black Phone<\/em><\/strong>. The film is based on a short story by Joe Hill in which a boy is kidnapp<\/a>ed and locked away in a basement with a disconnected phone that suddenly starts to ring. It was recently reported that Jeremy Davies<\/strong> would be joining the cast as well, and I theorized that Davies would be playing the kidnapper since he kind of has the market cornered on playing intense, weird guys. But as it turns out, it\u2019s Hawke who will be playing the kidnapper character.<\/p>\n

The Black Phone<\/em> producers\u00a0Blumhouse broke the news<\/a> that Ethan Hawke would be joining the cast of Scott Derrickson\u2019s upcoming flick. The film tells the story of a \u201ckidnapped kid who finds himself in a soundproof basement surrounded by the remains of other victims. When night falls, the antique \u2014 and disconnected \u2014 telephone in the room begins to ring with the calls from the dead.\u201d The official press release doesn\u2019t mention who Hawke is playing, but THR<\/a> has confirmed the actor will be playing the kidnapper.
\nHawke joins a cast that includes\u00a0\u00a0Mason Thames<\/strong>\u00a0(For All Mankind<\/em>),\u00a0Madeleine McGraw<\/strong>\u00a0(Toy Story 4<\/em>,\u00a0Secrets of Sulphur Springs<\/em>), and Jeremy Davies (Lost<\/em>).\u00a0Derrickson wrote the script with frequent collaborator C. Robert Cargill, based on a short story by Joe Hill. The story is effective and creepy, but it\u2019s also pretty clear that Derrickson and Cargill are adding their own spin and not remaining 100% faithful to the source material \u2013 and that\u2019s fine.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m very interested to see Hawke in this type of role. He doesn\u2019t usually play villainous characters, and to see him go into full-blown creeper mode is going to be interesting. I also like the idea of Hawke reuniting with the\u00a0Sinister<\/em> team of Derrickson and Cargill. Production on\u00a0The Black Phone<\/em> is set to start in North Carolina next month, and I imagine it won\u2019t be a long shoot since the majority of the story takes place in one location with very few characters. After that, Hawke is set to join the cast of the Disney+ Marvel series<\/a>\u00a0Moon Knight<\/em>. He\u2019ll be playing a villain there, too, so perhaps we\u2019re entering a new phase where Ethan Hawke plays antagonists for a change.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no release date set yet for\u00a0The Black Phone<\/em>, but it seems likely we won\u2019t see it until sometime next year.<\/p>\n
