New York Rep. Elise Stefanik said Thursday that Attorney General<\/a> Letitia James\u2019 damning report about Gov. Andrew Cuomo\u2019s administration\u2019s lack of transparency in reporting the total number of nursing homes deaths is a \u201cfirst step toward justice\u201d for grieving families. <\/p>\n

Stefanik went on Fox News<\/a>\u2019 \u201cHannity\u201d to blast Cuomo\u2019s \u201cmassive corruption scandal\u201d for underreporting the nursing home deaths, which the report says could be more than 13,000 despite the Department of Health\u2019s tally of 8,711 deaths. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe March edict that the governor put in place forced nursing homes to take positive COVID patients . . . put at risk our most vulnerable constituents in New York State,\u201d Stefanik told host Sean Hannity Thursday night. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere have been advocates who have lost loved one who have been asking for answers, accountability and transparency and at every turn the governor and his staff have smeared those individuals,\u201d she continued. <\/p>\n

\u201cFinally today is a first step towards justice,\u201d the Republican congresswoman added.<\/p>\n

Stefanik also called on Democrats and Republicans to issue subpoenas against Cuomo, state health commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker, and his senior staff. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey knew this number and yet they refused to be transparent with New Yorkers but what was most heartless is they weren\u2019t transparent with those who have lost loved ones,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

James\u2019 76-page report further states that at least 4,000 residents died after the state issued the controversial March mandate, which allowed COVID-stricken patients to continue to be admitted into nursing homes. The order was later revoked on May 10.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the pandemic and our investigations continue, it is imperative that we understand why the residents of nursing homes in New York unnecessarily suffered at such an alarming rate,\u201d the AG said. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we cannot bring back the individuals we lost to this crisis, this report seeks to offer transparency that the public deserves and to spur increased action to protect our most vulnerable residents,\u201d James noted.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
