\n In mid-June, the New York Red Bulls soccer team started training for the first time since mid-March. As they take the field again, they\u2019re preparing for the MLS Is Back tournament, kicking off July 8 in Orlando, Florida. But one player, 24-year-old Brian White, who was last season\u2019s leading goal scorer for the team, developed a new hobby during the lockdown: reading.<\/p>\n

While many pro athletes were playing video game<\/a>s or binge-watching up a storm, White, who has been living in Jersey City for the past year, decamped to Flemington, NJ, at the beginning of the lockdown. He\u2019s spent the past three months in his childhood bedroom with his younger brother. (\u201cSome of my old posters from high school are still up,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s got some flashback memories for sure.\u201d)<\/p>\n

Determined to make the best of a tough situation, he cracked open a book \u2014 and another, and another.<\/p>\n

\u201cI decided to push myself to read more,\u201d says White. \u201cGrowing up, when I\u2019d have homework assignments, I\u2019d never read the book. So just recently, I read \u201cThe Catcher in the Rye,\u201d which I probably should have read in high school. I finished \u201cBeneath A Scarlet Sky,\u201d about an Italian boy who ended up being a driver for a Nazi official.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other selections included \u201cThe Underground Railroad\u201d by Colson Whitehead (\u201cI couldn\u2019t put it down\u201d) and \u201cA Man Called Ove,\u201d \u201cBear Town\u201d and \u201cUs Against You,\u201d all by Fredrik Backman. (\u201cIf I know I like something by one author, I\u2019ll build off that and read everything by them,\u201d White says.<\/p>\n

As the team\u2019s practice routine returns, reading is more than just a fleeting hobby, but a part of his day.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been getting more interested in reading than watching TV,\u201d White says. \u201cI\u2019ve added books and reading into my daily routine.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
